Linz-Land: Cultural Sites and Trails
Accommodation in Linz-Land
Enns brings its urban history to life through striking buildings: substantial parts of the city wall and six defensive towers have been preserved, and the town tower is almost 60 metres high. The region also offers cultural attractions in Ansfelden, Wilhering and other towns. Trails through the landscape offer a variety of experiences too—from longer hikes to cycling and urban adventures.
Urban History, Monasteries and Culture
In Enns, the city wall and town tower offer two distinct impressions of the historic townscape: here, you can see sections of the wall and defensive towers; there, the tower rises almost 60 metres into the sky. At the Basilica of St. Laurence, another glimpse into history lies beneath the church: it stands above the remains of a Roman house. These can be visited on guided tours beneath the basilica.
In Ansfelden, the Anton Bruckner Museum celebrates the composer in his preserved original birthplace. In 2026, visits are planned from 4 April to 31 October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 11:00 and 16:00; guided tours are available by appointment. If the museum is a key part of your itinerary, check the opening hours again before your visit.
Wilhering Abbey is a Cistercian monastery with a Rococo church. Wilhering is also home to the permanent exhibition “Collection Prof. Fritz Fröhlich”; paintings are displayed in the old abbey brewery. St. Florian Abbey is another cultural attraction in Linz-Land. The pilgrimage church “Our Lady of Good Counsel” is located in Dörnbach.
The Sumerauerhof was first mentioned in a document around 1200 and developed into the enclosed four-sided farmstead seen today in the 17th century. Four-sided farmsteads are considered a hallmark of the region. The Sumerauerhof is home to endangered farm animal breeds, extensive orchards with old local fruit varieties, a kitchen garden, a natural playground and a garden restaurant. Its long history and varied features give the site several cultural and landscape dimensions to consider when planning your trip.
Hiking Trails and Views
Linz-Land has a dense network of regional hiking, running and cycling trails; the Donausteig long-distance trail also passes through the region. The MĂĽhlsteinweg offers specific reference points for gauging a hike: it is 8.55 kilometres long and takes about 2.8 hours. Along the way, you can see Enns town tower and the MĂĽhlviertel. The distance and approximate duration help you decide whether the trail fits your travel schedule.
The Prinzensteig runs from Wilhering to Linz through the KĂĽrnbergerwald, which offers a variety of hiking opportunities. This gives you a choice of a regional long-distance trail, a named route with specific endpoints and a forest area with further hiking options. The details are useful in different ways: the MĂĽhlsteinweg has a stated length and approximate duration, while the Prinzensteig is described by its route between Wilhering and Linz.
Cycling and Other Experiences
In the Wilhering area, the Passau-to-Vienna cycling route follows the Danube. Separate from this, a fish discovery trail is described as running along the cycle path by the Ottensheim–Wilhering power plant. In Enns, the “From Roman Camp to Trading Town” urban discovery trail includes a geology park. Each offers something different: the Danube route for cycling, the fish discovery trail beside the cycle path and the Enns discovery trail with its geology park.
In Traun, the outdoor pool at the Traun bathing centre has an 11,000 m² sunbathing lawn at the Trauner Au, with a view of Lake Oedt. This adds a waterside option to the cultural attractions and trails. You can organise the destinations by interest when planning your trip: Enns for urban history, Ansfelden for Anton Bruckner, Wilhering for its abbey and hiking area, and the Sumerauerhof for the history of four-sided farmsteads and its orchards.
A specific bus service runs from Linz Central Station (bus terminal) to St. Florian Abbey: bus route 410 connects these two endpoints. Check the current timetable before travelling.
