Bruckner’s Birthplace and Ansfelden’s Cultural History
The Anton Bruckner Museum is housed in the composer’s preserved original birthplace. A visit to Ansfelden can therefore include a place directly connected with Bruckner’s life. In the town centre, the Anton Bruckner monument stands in front of the ABC event venue, the Anton Bruckner Centre. It was unveiled in 1924 at a memorial celebration for Bruckner. The ABC opened in June 1996 and has since been used as a cultural and event centre with an extensive year-round cultural programme.
Ansfelden Parish Church is also a notable historical landmark: dedicated to Saint Valentine, it is one of the town’s listed buildings. The rectory was completed in 1707. Together with the birthplace and the monument, it offers several distinct stops if you want to discover Ansfelden through the lens of Bruckner and local architectural and cultural history.
Archaeological Traces and Trails
During the Early Iron Age, Burgwiese was a densely populated fortified hilltop settlement. Visible ramparts and ditches along the way there point to an earlier fortification. Archaeological excavations have also identified Petersberg and Burgwiese as important market and settlement sites, occupied since the Stone Age. The Archaeological Hiking Trail starts at the car park of the Stockinger inn and leads via Petersberg to Burgwiese. If you are interested in early settlement, the route connects these two historical sites with traces in the landscape.
Ansfelden is also on pilgrimage routes. The Austrian main route of the Way of St James crosses the town on its southern route, coming from St. Florian and heading towards Hörsching. Ansfelden is also on the third stage of the Benedict Pilgrimage Circular Route through the Traunviertel. For a different combination of exercise and culture, the Anton Bruckner Symphony Hiking Trail runs for about 9 km from the Anton Bruckner Centre in Ansfelden to the interior of St Florian Abbey. The route length and the stated start and end points can help you fit this outing into your day’s plans; check the conditions relevant to your date before setting out.
Cycling, Sport and Leisure
There are also various points of interest for a bike ride: the family-friendly R10 cycle path reaches Ansfelden before the Krems flows into the Traun. The R4 Traun Cycle Path runs directly along the border between Ansfelden and Traun and skirts Ansfelden. The routes described therefore differ in their location in relation to Ansfelden; they should not be considered the same route.
Other leisure options include the outdoor leisure pool, with more than 1,400 m² of water surface and 9,000 m² of sunbathing lawn, as well as the Ansfelden archery centre.
