Leonding: Cultural Trails, City History and Hotels
Accommodation in Leonding
Leonding offers several ways to explore its history and culture: three cultural trails, a city museum, historic buildings and churches. A weekly market and seasonal leisure and wellness options round out the offerings. When comparing the trails, their length and individual focus are useful points of reference.
Choose a Cultural Trail by Length and Theme
Leonding has three cultural trails, which were revised in 2019. The Tower Trail is 6.2 kilometres long and focuses on the Maximilian fortifications, known as the “Tower Line.” The five-kilometre Kürnberg Trail leads through Kürnberg Forest to archaeological sites and finds. At four kilometres, the City Trail is the shortest of the three; its architecture traces Leonding’s transformation from village to city.
The length comparison is clear: the Tower Trail, the longest, is 2.2 kilometres longer than the City Trail, the shortest. At five kilometres, the Kürnberg Trail falls in between. The trails also differ in focus: the Tower Line, archaeological sites in Kürnberg Forest and the city’s architectural history are their respective themes.
Tower 9 and Historical Traces
Leonding City Museum in Tower 9 is home to “Leondine,” a Stone Age woman who lived around 6,300 years ago. The two permanent exhibitions are accompanied by educational programs. Spanning just over 600 square metres, Tower 9 presents the region’s history through archaeological and natural history exhibits. The tower is also called “Apollonia” and is one of a total of 32 towers once built as part of the fortifications around Linz.
Another historical landmark is Kürnberg Castle, first mentioned in 1286. The 44er Haus was built in 1831/32 as Leonding’s third schoolhouse. These different dates offer insights into several periods of local history, although the buildings did not serve the same historical purpose.
Churches, Architecture and Contemporary Art
The Old Parish Church in Leonding bears traces of various architectural styles. The New Parish Church is octagonal, with the altar in the centre beneath a light dome. An octagonal glass pyramid directs light onto the centrally positioned altar. The two churches therefore each highlight different architectural features.
Since KUVA was founded in 2014, the 44er Gallery has hosted a varied programme of contemporary art exhibitions. The programme features art from the region and beyond; the individual exhibitions change. Another cultural venue is the Rufling Village Barn, which hosts youth, cultural and traditional events.
Weekly Market, Swimming and Wellness
The Leonding weekly market offers locally grown fruit and vegetables, savoury delicacies, homemade specialities and many other farm products. A visit centres on a selection that brings together regional foods and a variety of specialities.
Leonding outdoor pool has heated pools and a warm hall. Swimming is available from May to September. The Leonding city park also has a fitness and motor skills trail. The information about these amenities differs clearly: the outdoor pool has a stated seasonal period, while the fitness and motor skills trail is described by its location in the city park.
Panorama Wellness offers an open-air sauna courtyard, a whirlpool beneath a glass pyramid, plunge and Kneipp pools, and a relaxation area with views of the Alpine foothills. The facility can be reached on bus routes 11, 19 and 191 and tram lines 3 and 4. Alongside cultural and historical attractions, visitors can therefore choose wellness amenities with listed facilities and public transport routes.
