Wilhering brings together a range of different attractions: Rococo art at the abbey, the pilgrimage church in Dörnbach, and trails in the Kürnbergerwald and along the Danube. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are more interested in church art and monastic history or in a particular route and how long it takes.

Abbey Church, Museum and Pilgrimage Church

Wilhering Abbey Church has a richly decorated Rococo interior. Its colours, sculptures, paintings and stucco work define the interior. The abbey museum has a different focus: its six themed rooms take visitors through almost 900 years of monastic history. The museum also includes a permanent exhibition dedicated to Fritz Fröhlich. At the abbey, details of the interior design sit alongside a broader historical perspective.

In Dörnbach, the parish and pilgrimage church of Maria vom guten Rat (Our Lady of Good Counsel) stands on the southern foothills of the Kürnberg, within the market municipality of Wilhering. It was built on a sandstone hill. A distinctive architectural feature is its Late Gothic outdoor pulpit, with two coats of arms dating from 1501, described as unique in Austria. The church is open daily from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Park, Forest and Danube

Two different time scales meet in Wilhering Abbey Park: the grounds were laid out in the mid-19th century, while the yew tree growing there is almost 900 years old. The tree is designated a natural monument. The park’s history and the yew’s long lifespan offer two distinct points of interest, though they do not share the same timescale.

A network of paths and hiking trails leads from Wilhering Abbey directly to the Danube riverbank, where gravel and sandbanks can be found. The Kürnbergerwald’s extensive network of main trails is also just minutes from the abbey. The Prinzensteig hiking trail runs from Wilhering to Linz through the Kürnbergerwald. Alongside riverside paths, you can also choose routes with a destination beyond the forest.

The Passau–Vienna cycling route runs along the Danube in Wilhering. The fish nature trail follows the cycle path near the Ottensheim–Wilhering power station. The Bauern- und Holzknechtrunde offers a further scenic option: it passes through meadows and fields with panoramic views and a 1,000-year-old lime tree, through the Kürnbergerwald, and along the Innbach, the Danube floodplains and the Danube riverbank.

When planning your route, note the boundaries of a specific section: the part between Fall, the fish nature trail and the ferry is paved and fully accessible to wheelchair users. If you rely on this feature, check the path conditions before your visit. The nearby town of Ottensheim is also not far from Wilhering Abbey by Danube ferry. Check the current ferry service before planning a crossing.

Choose Routes by Duration

The two Planetenwanderweg routes differ considerably in length and duration. The short abbey route is about 300 metres long and takes around 45 minutes. The second route is a circular hike of about 4.5 kilometres, taking 2.5 to 3 hours including breaks. This time estimate is also relevant when comparing the routes: breaks are explicitly included for the longer option, while the abbey route is listed as taking around 45 minutes.

Along the Planetenwanderweg, a student team from Wilhering Abbey Grammar School offers guided tours by appointment. They are particularly suitable for students in school years three to six. If you are planning a guided tour, arrange a time in advance.

An Offering at the Abbey Café

The abbey café serves pastries and snacks such as the “Mönchsteller,” abbey oven bread and abbey baguette. As the menu may change, ask in advance about the current selection if you have a particular item in mind.
