Eggendorf im Traunkreis can be explored through two distinct themes: its castle and church history, and the Eggendorf Mill Trail, which consists of two circular routes. If you are planning a trip, you can place the historic buildings in context by looking at when they were built and how they were used, or focus on the trail as a topic in its own right. The town’s history spans everything from medieval references to specific details of church architecture.

Eggendorf Castle and the Church

Eggendorf Castle was first mentioned in a document from KremsmĂĽnster Abbey in 1224. The present-day castle was built by Florian Ostermayer in 1580. These two dates mark different milestones: the first documented mention and the construction of the present-day castle.

The castle chapel attached to Eggendorf Castle served as a parish church from 1784 to 1912. Eggendorf Church was built between 1911 and 1913 and consecrated by Bishop Rudigier on 15 June 1913. The periods therefore overlap: construction of the church began while the chapel was still serving as the parish church. This chronology places the two places of worship in context without equating their different functions and periods.

The church’s details can also be described precisely. Its tower is 38 metres high. The high altar painting depicts the Assumption of Mary, is by Martin Johann Schmidt, and bears the date 1799. For those interested in cultural history, this brings together the building’s history, a named work of art and a precise architectural measurement.

Hueb Water Castle and Weitersdorf Castle

Hueb Water Castle is a simple, two-storey, hook-shaped building and a remnant of a noble estate. The estate still stood at the end of the 17th century on an island in a pond, part of which still remains. The pond reference describes the former location of the estate; the hook shape and two storeys characterise the water castle’s design.

The history of the old Volkerstorfer fief associated with Hueb also goes back a long way: it had been in the possession of the MĂĽhlwanger family since the mid-14th century. A later period of use concerns the Hueb Water Castle estate, which operated as an inn from 1961 to 1991.

Weitersdorf Castle was a former water castle in Eggendorf im Traunkreis. Its first mention as a fief of Sigmund Wolkauf is dated to either 1458 or 1460. These two years remain alternative dates; together, they indicate the timeframe of the early reference.

Mill Trail, Landscape and Museum

Eggendorf im Traunkreis is nestled in the landscape of the Sipbach Valley. The Eggendorf Mill Trail, which consists of two circular routes, is another option to consider when planning your trip. This means that, alongside the historic buildings, two circular routes offer another way to explore the town. The local history and the Mill Trail have different focuses: the former centres on buildings, functions and dates, while the latter focuses on the format of a circular route.
