Discover Traun: Castle History, Nature and Activities
Accommodation in Traun
Traun offers travellers several distinct themes: castle and regional history, art from the local scene, water and green spaces, and outdoor activities. This makes it easier to choose a focus for your stay. You can put culture at the centre of your visit or plan time at the bathing lake, on walking paths and at forest education activities. This also makes it easy to choose what interests you most during a shorter visit, rather than giving equal weight to every offering.
Castle History and Regional Culture
Traun Castle is based on a moated castle dating back to the 12th century. The circular enceinte houses a freely accessible exhibition on the history of the castle and the nobility. The exhibition on the history of the counts and the castle in the attic tells the story of the Abensperg-Traun family and the castle. The castle therefore focuses both on the development of the building and on the family history associated with it.
The Raum der Kunst presents exhibitions by artists from the regional art scene. Traun Castle also serves as a venue for classical concerts. If a concert is important to your stay, check the dates for your travel period.
The Museum im Steinhumergut houses more than 3,000 exhibits. The collection includes farming tools, household items, documents, deeds and photographs. It thus brings together objects from rural life with written and photographic holdings. While the castle exhibitions explore its history and art from the region, the museum offers a broad collection of different types of objects.
Bathing Lake, Outdoor Pool and Parks
Oedt bathing lake is a groundwater lake in Traun covering 99,000 m², with a depth of up to 6 m. The lakeside promenade is ideal for long walks. Those who prefer a swimming pool can find a 50-metre L-shaped pool with an adjoining non-swimmers’ area at the Badezentrum outdoor pool. The lake and pool offer different experiences: the waterside and walking path define the former, while the shape of the pool and its dedicated non-swimmers’ area define the latter.
The parks also offer a variety of settings for a break outdoors. The park around Traun Castle is in the heart of the town centre and includes green spaces, mature trees and the castle moat. In Alt-St. Martin, a park of around 2.5 ha lies directly beside the MĂĽhlbach. It features century-old trees, gravel paths, park benches, play equipment and green spaces that invite visitors to walk and linger.
Activities and Nature in Traun
The Renata Hönisch Motorikpark® is free for the public to use. Its four groups of apparatus make up a training area designed for all ages. This offers a different kind of activity from a walk along the lakeside promenade: there, the focus is on walking by the water; here, it is on exercising on the equipment.
The forest education trail combines information with an immersive forest experience. Around 40 newly designed panels provide information about different tree and shrub species, the forest and its importance to people. There are also new forest education stations where visitors can experience the forest with all their senses. You can combine the trail with an interest in plants and forest topics, or make the stations a focus of your stay in their own right.
Cycling is also connected to the area: the Römerradweg has run through Traun since 2009. This gives you a range of possible focuses to plan around—from history and regional art to walks and forest topics, as well as exercise, swimming and a route that runs through the town.
