Discover Kronstorf: Organ, history and trails
Accommodation in Kronstorf
If you’re looking for a hotel in Kronstorf, you can choose what to explore based on several specific interests: cultural history includes the Kronstorf Bruckner organ, historic features of the parish church, the Brucknerplatz column and the necropolis in Winkling. Other options include the Kirchschlägerweg circular trail, the recreation area along the Enns River and a stop on the Linz–Steyr bus route. This gives you a choice of different themes for your stay: music and local history, a named circular trail or leisure time by the river. Plan your visit according to which of these interests appeals to you most.
Culture and local history
The Kronstorf Bruckner organ has been preserved in its original condition and is considered a valuable cultural document of the Romantic organ sound. The oldest surviving features of the parish church date from around 1300. These include the small tuff-stone doorway on the south side and early Gothic wall paintings on the inner north wall. The two examples represent different forms of cultural heritage: an architectural detail on the south side and artistic decoration inside the church. If you’re interested in architecture, the doorway offers a specific point of interest; the wall paintings add an art-historical dimension.
Another historic landmark is the Brucknerplatz column. It has stood on Brucknerplatz since 1838 and was erected as a plague column. In Winkling, there is a necropolis with around 100 burial mounds. This archaeological site offers a different focus from the organ or the church’s architectural features. This lets you distinguish between music, architecture, monuments and archaeological traces when exploring local history, rather than reducing all the sites to a single story.
Anton Bruckner’s time as an assistant schoolteacher in Kronstorf can also be placed in its historical context: from 1843 to 1845, he lived in a room of around six square metres. The “Smallest Bruckner Museum in the World” focuses on this connection to Bruckner. The details about the room’s size and the years he lived there make his personal living and working circumstances tangible. At the same time, this stage of his life can be distinguished from the older church features and the column that has stood on Brucknerplatz since 1838.
Plan a visit to the Bruckner Museum
A key must be collected to access the “Smallest Bruckner Museum in the World.” From Monday to Friday, between 08:00 and 12:00, you can collect the key from the municipal office. You can also collect it there on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 to 18:00. Outside these hours, the key can be collected from Café Ingrid opposite. Plan around these access arrangements and check the access information before your visit so you know where to collect the key.
Circular trail, river and transport
The Kirchschlägerweg is a circular trail that starts at the Kronstorf municipal office in the town centre. If you’d like to include a circular trail in your plans, both the route type and the starting point are specified. The recreation area along the Enns River is also part of the local leisure offering. It has a different focus from the circular trail and the historic sites, so you can choose according to whether you’re more interested in local history, a circular trail or leisure activities by the river.
Kronstorf is served by the Linz–Steyr bus route, with a stop in the town. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date.
