Asten: Water, Cycling Routes and History
Accommodation in Asten
Asten offers several highlights for a stay: the Ausee swimming lake amid the Danube floodplains, cycling and walking routes, local history and local everyday attractions. When looking for a hotel in Asten, it helps to first consider which of these aspects matter for your trip. Water, exercise, culture and a visit to the weekly market each raise different planning considerations.
Water and routes around Asten
Ausee is a 23-hectare swimming lake amid the Danube floodplains near Asten. Ausee Cable is open daily from May 1 to September 13; check the dates for your travel period in advance. The counterclockwise 4-mast lift is 800 meters long. At the separate Rixen Full Size Cable, up to nine people can be pulled at the same time.
Walking is also one of the options: the Ausee in Asten is ideal for leisurely walks. The market town’s activity map features well-signposted routes of varying lengths, marked in different colors for running, Nordic walking and walking. You can access individual routes on your phone using a QR code and follow them on foot. The map thus helps you find routes suited to different activities and distances.
The R14 Anton Bruckner Cycle Path and the R1.10 Kul-Tour Cycle Path pass through the municipality. The Danube Trail was opened in Asten on July 3, 2010. The day of your trip is also important for planning: Ausee Cable operates daily during the season, while the weekly market is held on Wednesdays. If you would like to plan for both, you can arrange your stay around these different time windows.
Church and the history of Danube transport
The present-day Old Parish Church of St. James in Asten was built from 1724 to 1735 and consecrated together with three altars. The Baroque high altar and the two side altars were rebuilt between 1820 and 1825. The church still has an organ, first mentioned in 1875 and made by organ builder Matthäus Mauracher.
A church in Asten is documented as far back as the 15th century. On April 15, 1449, an altar was consecrated there in honor of Saints James the Greater and Leonard. This earlier reference can be viewed as a distinct part of the town’s history, alongside the building history of the present-day Old Parish Church.
The Raffelstetten Customs Regulations also tell the story of Danube transport. They were issued in 906/907 in Raffelstetten, which is now within the municipality of Asten, and regulated customs duties and tolls for traffic on the Danube. The regulations survive today in a 13th-century copy.
PANEUM and insights into everyday life
The PANEUM – Wunderkammer des Brotes (Chamber of Wonders of Bread) can be explored on a guided tour or with an audio guide. The tour is also an architectural discovery. Tickets and guided tours can be booked online; check the booking details before your trip.
The weekly market in Asten is held every Wednesday from 07:00 to 12:00. It offers goods from the region and further afield. These include bread, meat, fish and smoked goods, as well as fruit, vegetables, pickled foods, nuts, syrups, oils, distillates, spirits, butter and eggs. As the market is held on a fixed day of the week, it is worth checking it against your travel dates.
The repair café in Asten is a meeting place where visitors can watch repairs, lend a hand or chat over coffee and cake. It offers a different way to experience local everyday life than the market, church and local history, or activities related to water and exercise.
Planning your stay and hotel search
