The 34-kilometre-long Nockalm Road runs between Innerkrems and Ebene Reichenau and can be travelled by car, motorcycle or bus. Along the road, you can discover numerous free exhibitions and themed trails. The Nockalm Road is also home to the largest contiguous Swiss stone pine forest in the eastern Alps. You can therefore include a drive along the road, themed trails and nature experiences in your travel plans.

Hiking Trails and Lakes

At Falkertsee, there is a choice of hikes of varying lengths: the walk around the lake takes about 30 minutes, while the Falkertsee–Moschelitzen–Falkertsee circular route takes three to four hours. Falkertsee is also a starting point for many short and full-day hikes. These two time estimates illustrate the difference between a short walk and a longer hike. On the Turracher Höhe, the Three Lakes Trail passes Turracher See, Grünsee and Schwarzsee. Designed as a family hiking experience, it features information boards about alpine nature, flora and fauna.

A circular hiking trail leads from Steuerberg to St. Johann Church, continues to the Bösensteiner Waterfall and loops back around Goggausee. The waterfall is considered a special natural gem in Steuerberg. Well-marked, numbered hiking trails also lead through the surrounding area from Steuerberg and Wachsenberg. Activities at Goggausee vary with the season: in summer, you can swim, fish and go boating, while in winter you can ice skate.

A section of the Slow Trail at Maltschacher See runs through the vineyards of Trippelgut. Rest benches, a viewing platform and information boards are among the trail’s features. The lake’s undeveloped shores provide a habitat for protected bird and fish species; motorboats are not permitted on the lake. More than 100 different bird species, as well as butterflies, bats and beavers, live in the Bleistätter Moor nature reserve. Ossiacher See is 11 kilometres long, with a shoreline stretching 25 kilometres; you can cycle around it on a circular route.

Culture and Regional Traditions

The area’s cultural attractions each have a distinct character. Glanegg Castle Ruins have a history spanning more than 900 years and were once an important fortress and noble residence. Ossiach Abbey was founded in 1024 and is associated with a Romanesque abbey church and Baroque artworks. The Carinthian Summer music festival was founded in 1969 at Ossiach Abbey on Ossiacher See.

Today, the Bamberger Amthof serves as a cultural and event centre. The collections at the Amthof Museum in Feldkirchen cover prehistoric periods, the Roman era and Gothic objects, as well as mills, flax and linen, customs and traditional dress. St. Lorenzen is a pilgrimage site. On 15 August, a pilgrimage travels from Ebene Reichenau to St. Anne’s Church in St. Lorenzen. This is followed by a large outdoor traditional customs day without amplification, featuring old traditions such as wrestling.

Getting Around During Your Stay

Feldkirchen in Kärnten is listed as the nearest train station to the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve; Ebene Reichenau Ort/Friedhof is listed as a bus stop. Timetables may change, so check your connection before travelling. Nockmobil can be booked between 08:00 and 20:00; check the current booking rules before making your plans. The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve administration offers hiking maps, nature information and the current events programme. It also provides information about accommodation providers, restaurants and places to visit in the region around the biosphere reserve.

The pilgrimage takes place on 15 August, while activities at Goggausee are tied to summer and winter. This makes it easy to distinguish date-specific traditions from seasonal activities when planning your trip.
