Falkertsee: Mountain Lake, Hiking Trails and Heidi-Alm
Accommodation in Falkertsee
Falkertsee appeals to travellers who want to plan their trip around the landscape and activities. The mountain lake is at an altitude of 1,870 m and is up to 13 m deep. When looking for a hotel, it is helpful to first consider whether hikes, the Murmelsteig, Heidi-Alm or a winter activity should shape your stay. The trails and activities offer different focuses; some activities at Heidi-Alm depend on the season or programme.
Mountain Lake and Routes around Falkertsee
The walk to Schweinbichel starts at Kärntnerhaus and follows hiking trail No. 1. The named starting point and the route are the specific landmarks for planning. If you would rather include a summit route, there is a described route from Falkertsee to Falkertspitz: the climb leads steeply uphill or, on a gentler gradient, via Hundsfeldscharte to the 2,308 m-high summit. The return route goes via Falkertscharte and Sonntagstal to Falkertsee. The two ascent options differ in the gradient described; the return route is also specified.
Stage 16 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail also reaches Falkertsee via Hundsfeldscharte. This gives you different route options to consider when planning your trip: a walk to Schweinbichel, the route to Falkertspitz and a stage of the long-distance trail. The lake itself remains a distinct landmark in the landscape, with its elevation and a depth of up to 13 m.
Heidi-Alm: Circular Trail, Activities and Refreshments
The Heidi-Alm children's adventure park has more than 100 figures along a circular trail. Guided fishing is offered at Heidi's fishpond as part of the Heidi-Alm weekly programme. This activity is tied to the programme; check the dates before your trip. Pony-riding lessons and rides can be arranged at Heidi's pony ranch. Here, too, check booking requirements and seasonal availability in advance.
The ZirbenhĂĽtte snack station at Heidi-Alm is a separate place to stop for refreshments: it serves regional specialities in an alpine hut atmosphere. Opening days may change with the seasons. The Nockmobil is one way to get to Heidi-Alm. If you plan to use this option, check the latest booking information before your trip.
Murmelsteig and Cross-Country Skiing in Winter
The Murmelsteig starts at Heidi Alm at Falkertsee and leads up to Falkert. It is a moderately difficult via ferrata with rope bridges. This makes it a different kind of outing from the walk to Schweinbichel: the described via ferrata and the designated hiking trail are the key differences when choosing between them.
In winter, the Falkertsee cross-country ski trail runs across the frozen Falkertsee and is 500 metres long. Its operation is seasonal and weather-dependent. The trail is therefore a specific winter activity, while the circular trail, pony activities and guided fishing each offer a different focus. When planning a stay, you can use these differences to choose a destination based on the activities that matter to your trip.
