Scenery and activities in Turracher Höhe

Turracher Höhe lies in the heart of the UNESCO Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of options: an accessible circular trail, hiking trails connected with lakes or mining, and seasonal winter activities. So when finding your way around, it’s not just the name of an attraction that matters, but also whether you’re looking for a hike, an experience or a winter activity.

AlmZeit and other experiences

The accessible AlmZeit circular trail starts right at the mountain station of the Panoramabahn and takes about two hours. This gives you an idea of how much time to allow for the loop. Nocky’s AlmZeit is an interactive adventure world for children on the Turracher Höhe plateau. It includes two wooden ball runs, one 50 metres long and the other 30 metres. The circular trail and the ball runs are different offerings under the AlmZeit name: for the loop, the starting point and approximate duration are clear, while for the runs, the length of each one is specified. You can also search for real gold nuggets at a gold-panning site on the Turracher Höhe; any pieces you find can be taken home. The Nocky Flitzer operates in both summer and winter, making it an activity for both seasons.

Hiking trails: lakes and mining history

The Turracher 3-Lakes Trail is a hiking loop that connects Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee. It is also a trail for the senses through Austria’s largest contiguous Swiss stone pine forest and runs around the three mountain lakes. The route therefore offers two points of reference: the sequence of lakes and the Swiss stone pine forest. The Barbaraweg takes a different focus: it is a panoramic trail following the traces of Turracher’s historic mining tradition. Nearby, in Turrach, the “Holz und Eisen” mining museum illustrates the region’s mining history. The excursions thus bring together lake and forest landscapes with the theme of mining, while the trails and the museum remain separate offerings.

Winter activities compared

There are also different types of winter activities to choose from. A 12 km ski loop runs around Turracher See and reaches an altitude of 2,020 m. The Turracher Höhe also has 16 km of cross-country ski trails. The distances refer to different activities: a ski loop and cross-country ski trails. For BergAUFrodeln, the Übungswiesenlift takes guests up with special sleds before the downhill ride begins. The options therefore range from a ski loop and cross-country trails to a lift ride followed by a sled run.
