Glanegg: Castle, Church Art and Trails
Accommodation in Glanegg
Glanegg can be explored through several themes: Glanegg Castle represents architectural history and its former residential and defensive functions, while the cultural trail and the hiking, cycling and riding trails offer a different focus. Other themes include art and church history, such as the fresco cycle in the parish church of St. Gandolf and the pilgrimage and branch church of Maria Feicht.
Glanegg Castle and its architectural history
From the High Middle Ages until the 19th century, Glanegg Castle was an aristocratic residence and fortification. Its key buildings include a Romanesque keep, a Late Gothic palas and a chapel. The chapel’s foundations date back to the castle’s founding period. To understand the castle’s cultural history, you can consider its former function and architecture through its individual buildings. This puts its long-standing residential and defensive functions alongside its specific architectural features as two ways of looking at the castle.
Church art and the cultural trail
The fresco cycle in the nave and on the triumphal arch of the parish church of St. Gandolf was created in 1440 by Master Friedrich and his son Johannes von Laibach of the Villach workshop. The pilgrimage and branch church of Maria Feicht was first mentioned in a document between 1060 and 1076. The dates mark different things: 1440 is the year the fresco cycle was created, while 1060 to 1076 is the period of Maria Feicht’s first documented mention. The Glanegg Cultural Trail adds to these perspectives with information panels on parish history and the history of the municipality. The brief panels about the churches are placed on the walls of their respective cemeteries. This brings specific connections to art and churches together with a broader view of parish and municipal history.
Trails to suit your destination and interests
For outdoor activities, Glanegg has its own riding trail network as well as well-maintained hiking and cycling trails through wooded areas. The Glanegg Castle Trail leads from Glanegg through forests and hills to Glanegg Castle. A description of the Haidensee Circular Trail available as of September 4, 2026, leads from the car park by Glanegg municipality towards Haidensee and returns to Glanegg along the Glan River. The Castle Trail and the Haidensee Circular Trail therefore differ in their destinations and routes: one leads to the castle, while the other goes to Haidensee and returns along the Glan River. Hiking and cycling are described via trails, while riding is covered by a dedicated trail network; your preferred way of getting around can therefore be another starting point for your choice.
The Castle Trail is accessible by train and bus. Check transport connections for your route before setting off. For the Haidensee Circular Trail, check local conditions before setting out. Trail conditions may also change on the Castle Trail.
