Bodensdorf on Lake Ossiach
Accommodation in Bodensdorf
Bodensdorf lies on Lake Ossiach, Carinthia’s third-largest lake. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay here, you might first consider which aspects of the area matter most for your trip: the lake, an outing in nature, summer hikes, or the village’s churches. The destinations below offer some specific ideas.
The lake and public waterside spots
Bodensdorf is one of eight boat stops on Lake Ossiach. If a boat trip is part of your plans, check the schedule in advance. Seetaxi Steger in Bodensdorf also has an associated boat rental service; availability may be seasonal.
The Bodensdorf lido at Fischerweg 8 offers the largest free access to the lake on Lake Ossiach. Facilities include an adventure playground for children and a lakeside terrace with an appealing selection of food and drinks. The mini beach in Bodensdorf is also a free access point to the lake, but can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Keep this access restriction in mind when planning a visit to this particular spot.
For a short break, Kurpark Bodensdorf is right by the lake, with benches and green spaces. The Bodensdorf Tourist Information Office is on the north shore of Lake Ossiach. This gives you a choice of different lakeside spots: a designated access point to the lake, a mini beach accessible only on foot or by bicycle, and a public place to take a short break.
Nature, hikes and excursions
The Bleistätter Moor in Bodensdorf is a species-rich natural and scenic area, as well as a European protected area. It offers a different focus from the immediate lakeside access points: here, the protected moorland takes centre stage. Bodensdorf is also an ideal starting point for hikes in summer. If you plan your stay around the season and your intended activities, these offer two different ways to enjoy time outdoors.
One specific high-altitude route is the Gerlitzen Panoramic Road: it is 13 kilometres long and leads directly from Bodensdorf to an elevation of 1,750 metres. The nearby Gerlitzen Alpe can be reached from Bodensdorf by car. If you’re interested in climbing, you’ll find the Peterlewand climbing garden in St. Urban, Bodensdorf. The pavilion above the climbing garden offers wide-ranging views of the eastern shore of Lake Ossiach and Ossiach. The panoramic road is a high-altitude route; at Peterlewand, the climbing garden and pavilion offer expansive lake views.
Churches and regional cuisine
Two churches offer different points of historical interest. The Catholic branch church of Alt St. Josef in Bodensdorf was built in the 17th century. On the western edge of Bodensdorf stands the modern hall church, the Parish Church of St. Josef on Lake Ossiach, built in 1929 to designs by Hans Prutscher. Their construction dates thus span the 17th to the 20th century; both churches offer a specific reason to explore the area’s history and architecture.
Café Pavillon am See serves Carinthian specialities from small regional producers. The food selection may vary seasonally. If regional cuisine is one of your travel interests, keep this seasonal aspect in mind when planning.
