Himmelberg – Tiebel Springs, Mills and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Himmelberg
Himmelberg combines nature, hiking and architectural history with a seasonal market. Its clearly defined highlights include the Tiebel springs in the forest, trails with specific destinations, the parish church and several mills. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: the source of the Tiebel, a hike, architectural history or a market day.
Tiebel Springs and Hiking Destinations
The Tiebel rises in a patch of woodland near Himmelberg, where the springs bubble to the surface. They are fed by the groundwater flow of the upper Gurk Valley. Hiking trail number 1 leads directly from Himmelberg’s municipal office to the source of the Tiebel. For travelers interested in waterways, this links the description of the spring area with a specifically named hiking route.
The hike “Along the Way over the Four Mountains” is described as a loop around Himmelberg and passes over four mountains. By contrast, trail number 1 leads directly from the municipal office to a specific destination: the source of the Tiebel. The two hike descriptions therefore have different focuses: one centers on the source of the river, the other on the loop over four mountains. During the annual Four Mountains Hike around Himmelberg, more than 500 hikers set out on this route every Whit Monday. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the event date again in advance.
Parish Church and Architectural History
Himmelberg Parish Church has a Gothic core dating from the 13th century. It was remodeled in the Baroque style and enlarged in the 17th century; following a fire in 1711, further Baroque alterations and expansion took place. To understand the church’s architecture, it is worth considering this sequence: both the Gothic core and the later Baroque changes are part of the church’s architectural history.
Mills and Technical Heritage
The Mehlteurer Floder mill is one of the last mills still in working order. The well-preserved Venetian sawmill is the first point of interest on the Tiebel Springs hike. The Himmelberg Art Mill has been in operation for around 300 years and runs its own power plant, fed by the Tiebel. These examples show different aspects of the history of milling: continued operation; the sawmill’s state of preservation and its location on the hiking trail; and the age and hydropower technology of the art mill. In Himmelberg, the Tiebel thus features in two different contexts: as a natural waterway and as a source of hydropower for the art mill.
Farmers’ Market in Himmelberg
From May to October, the Himmelberg farmers’ market takes place on the first Friday of each month in the market square in Himmelberg. If the market is important to your stay, check the date again before your visit, as seasonal dates may be updated.
