Discover Steuerberg: hiking, Lake Goggau and history
Accommodation in Steuerberg
Steuerberg brings together lakeside nature, marked hiking trails and historic buildings to help you plan your trip. The municipality is located in the foothills of the Nock Mountains. Lake Goggau is a natural swimming lake within the municipality. In summer, it invites visitors to swim; in winter, it is used for ice skating. The activities mentioned at the same lake therefore change with the seasons. The Bösensteiner Waterfall is a distinctive natural feature of Steuerberg and one of the destinations linked with other places by a circular hiking trail. The foothills of the Nock Mountains define the municipality’s landscape; the lake and waterfall are specific natural destinations.
Hiking trails, the lake and places to stop
Well-marked, numbered hiking trails lead from Steuerberg and Wachsenberg. A circular hiking trail connects Steuerberg with St. Johann Church, the Bösensteiner Waterfall and Lake Goggau. This brings together different ways of finding your way: hiking trails starting from the two places named above, and a specific circular route linking the church, waterfall and lake. The Steuerberg municipal hiking map is available free of charge from the municipal office. The numbers and markings help with navigation; the map is another useful resource and is available from the municipal office. In the village of Steuerberg and along the way, there are inns where you can stop for a meal, offering Carinthian Brettljause and drinks. They add a specific opportunity to stop for refreshments to your hiking plans, with a named Carinthian dish and drinks.
Churches and historic destinations
The parish church of Steuerberg can be understood through its architectural history. It was built around 1300 as a Romanesque choir-tower church and converted into a Gothic wall-pillar church in the last quarter of the 15th century. It also received a choir built onto the tower. The conversion marks the transition from a Romanesque to a Gothic architectural style; the same church thus offers a specific point of reference for two eras. The light column stands in the parish church cemetery and is still in use today.
The parish church of Wachsenberg stands on a hill that is visible from far away within the municipality of Steuerberg and is dedicated to Saint Andrew. The 11th-century Steuerberg Castle ruins are a protected monument and an interesting destination in the surrounding area. The 16th-century tithe barn in Hart is also in the area around Steuerberg and is considered a destination for an outing. The dates provide a direct comparison between the castle ruins and the tithe barn, built later.
Different themes for your trip
When deciding on your trip, you can sort the offerings by season and theme. At Lake Goggau, swimming in summer gives way to ice skating in winter; the historic sites, by contrast, mark out a timeline from the 11th to the 16th century, with the church built around 1300 and later remodelled in between. Hiking also offers a clear distinction: trails start from Steuerberg and Wachsenberg, while a named circular route links several destinations. Steuerberg is also one of the 19 municipalities in the Carinthian Timber Road initiative.
