Vandœuvres – Heritage and Rural Landscape
Accommodation in Vandœuvres
When looking for a hotel in Vandœuvres, it is worth taking the character of the municipality into account as well. Two thirds of the municipal area consists of agricultural land. At the same time, local highlights range from historic buildings to weekly markets and routes through the countryside. This allows you to consider Vandœuvres not only in terms of where to stay, but also according to the interests you want to shape your visit around.
Rural Landscape and Routes
The natural and landscape heritage includes rows of oak trees, hedgerows, wooded strips, extensive areas of open countryside and gardens. Switzerland’s historic gardens are listed in the ICOMOS inventory. Numerous routes also cross Vandœuvres; they are recorded in the Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland. Together, these features show a municipality whose landscape is as much a part of its character as its individual historic buildings.
For regional orientation, the Seymaz-Région map, newly reissued in 2022, shows hiking routes through seven municipalities: Choulex, Gy, Jussy, Meinier, Presinge, Puplinge and Vandœuvres. It also highlights rural landscapes, nature reserves, monuments, picnic areas, regional gastronomy and public transport. A Cologny-Vandœuvres guide describes a route that can be travelled on foot or by bicycle, with family or friends. These offer different ways to find your bearings: a hiking map covering several municipalities and a guide to a described route.
Building History and Architecture
The Gallo-Roman villa of Vandœuvres was built around the middle of the 1st century AD. Later, its baths were extended, its wall paintings renewed and its garden equipped with a monumental basin. Its history thus encompasses several changes to the bathing area and its furnishings, as well as the design of the garden. Despite later alterations, the Temple of Vandœuvres retains the Gothic character of the former Church of Saint-Jacques.
The Saint-Jacques Chapel south of the village tells another story of construction. Architect Bernard Erbeia built it in 1975 for the Société catholique romaine de Choulex. Its design is defined by the hexagon, the choice of materials and the volume of the roof structure. The chapel is in excellent condition; its architectural qualities and state of preservation underpin its recognized heritage value. Vandœuvres thus brings together ancient building history, Gothic architecture and a 20th-century religious building as distinct themes.
Weekly Market and Local Offerings
The Vandœuvres market takes place on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Place de Vandœuvres. Check the schedule before travelling. At the market, the Maison de Pressy stall offers homemade tarts, cakes and quiches, as well as hot chocolate and coffee. The Il Salernitano delicatessen sells Italian products such as antipasti, olives, mozzarella, sauces, pasta and oil. The two stalls offer different specialities: sweet and savoury baked goods at one, Italian delicacies at the other.
The Les Bougeries farmers’ market is located at Ferme Michèle et René Stalder, Route de Choulex 80. Contact them by phone before visiting. This makes it possible to plan this visit specifically, while the weekly market at Place de Vandœuvres has its own stated day and time.
Golf and Nature
The Golf Club de Genève has an 18-hole championship course within the municipality. Robert Trent Jones Senior laid it out in 1973; from 2016 to 2018, it was completely renovated according to a plan by Robert Trent Jones Junior. The club facilities include a covered driving range, several putting greens, and areas for practising the short game and bunker shots. The grounds are home to 48 types of meadow and lawn, 38 species of breeding birds, 20 species of dragonflies and 17 species of butterflies active during the day. The club’s ponds play an important role in the life and protection of various species because bodies of water are rare in the Cologny-Vandœuvres region.
Public Transport
Bus routes 33 and 38 serve the Vandœuvres-Village stop. As transport information can change, check the current route before travelling. Alongside the local landscape and cultural highlights, this gives you a specific stop name and the bus routes serving it to help plan your trip.
