A stay in Meinier can focus on nature observation or cultural history. The Les Marais de Sionnet nature reserve represents the area’s landscape and birdlife; Château de Rouelbeau and Eglise Saint-Pierre de Meinier offer different insights into architectural history. Trails, cultural offerings and seasonal produce complement these themes.

Wetlands and Birdwatching

The Les Marais de Sionnet nature reserve lies within the municipalities of Meinier and Choulex. A river restoration project recreated wetland habitats on the former marshland plots of Les Creuses and Prés-de-L’Oie. The area is a natural feature that contributes to the region’s ecological diversity, and is popular with ornithologists throughout the year—including during the breeding season, in winter and during migration periods. At least 250 species have been observed in the wetlands. If you would like to focus on birdlife, you can take these different periods into account when planning your trip. Be sure to stay on the paths in the nature reserve to avoid disturbing wildlife.

Landscape and Trails

The wider area around Meinier is known as a green Geneva landscape of farmland, forests, natural wetlands, gentle hills and open spaces. The circular hiking trail “Circuit de Meinier — balade par Gy et Corsier à l'est de Genève” passes through the Geneva countryside and nearby villages. The “Rouelbeau Castle Loop” is described as an easy hike past historical sites. The route descriptions therefore have different focuses: landscape and villages in one case, historic sites in the other. Check the current route before setting out on a hike.

History and Architecture

The lords of Faucigny built Château de Rouelbeau between 1339 and 1355. An educational trail at the château explains the history of this important monument. The ruins are considered a point of interest on hiking trails around Meinier. After twelve years of archaeological excavations, the site reopened to the public in September 2016. Check the current conditions before your visit.

Eglise Saint-Pierre de Meinier has been classified as a monument since 11 July 1956. The church contains a Baroque altarpiece made of polychrome wood; it also has Neo-Gothic choir stalls dating from 1865. These two features offer different points of interest: an altarpiece is a structure behind an altar, and “polychrome” means multicoloured. The choir stalls are part of a Neo-Gothic design. These details and styles can be distinguished when looking at the church.

The Noyer centenaire stands on private property behind the church of St Paul de Meinier. The tree is 35 metres tall, and its crown has a diameter of 113 metres. Take the private-property status into account when planning your visit.
