Carouge Ge lies directly south of Geneva and forms a continuous urban area with the city. Its cityscape includes a well-preserved historic centre, leafy squares and urban residential neighbourhoods. Along the Arve, Carouge stretches across flat to gently rolling terrain. The city’s history dates back to 1248; in the 18th century, the Kingdom of Sardinia commissioned the design and construction of a new city in the Italian style.

Historic Centre and Market Square

In Vieux-Carouge, you can stroll from Place de l’Octroi along the decorated pedestrian street Rue Saint Joseph to Place du Marché. Lined with plane trees, Place du Marché is the city’s economic and social centre. The market is held there on Wednesdays and Saturdays. From March to October, there is also an evening market on Thursdays, with a Mediterranean atmosphere. As the municipality may change market days, check the dates before your visit.

Museums, Theatre and Sacred Architecture

The collection at the Musée de Carouge ranges from ceramics and contemporary art to historical artefacts, documents, paintings, sculptures, photographs and everyday objects. Particularly noteworthy is its significant collection of fine faience, connected with Carouge’s history as a centre for faience factories and pottery workshops. Since 1987, the museum has organised the International Ceramics Competition (Concours international de céramique, CIC). As part of the Parcours des ateliers carougeois, you can visit craft workshops in Carouge.

Since 1958, the Théâtre de Carouge has been a venue for theatrical productions. The Église Sainte-Croix was inaugurated in 1780 and is known for its carillon of 36 bells and its organ. Built in 1822, the Temple de Carouge is a remarkable example of Neo-Gothic religious art. The city has installed numerous works of art in its streets and parks, squares and public buildings; the selection may grow over time.
