Satigny: Vineyards, Wineries and History
Accommodation in Satigny
Satigny is Switzerland’s largest winegrowing municipality; 438 hectares of vineyards are part of its landscape. This gives your travel plans a clear focus on winegrowing, without reducing Satigny to a single experience. The municipality also offers historical points of interest and a hiking route that passes through several places. When choosing a hotel, you can decide whether you want to spend most of your time on wine, history or outdoor activities.
Winegrowing and Landscape
The slope of Choully rises above the village of Satigny. The vineyards there lie at an altitude of 450 to 500 metres, on clay-silt soil with limestone. Domaine des Alouettes has 17 hectares of vineyards. Most of them are within the Satigny controlled designation of origin on the right bank of the Rhône; the terroir is predominantly clay-limestone.
Domaine de la Devinière cultivates 13 hectares of vineyards in Satigny. It also offers a tour of the cellar and wine press, with explanations from vine growing through to winemaking, as well as wine tastings. The tour lasts one to one and a half hours. If you plan to take part, confirm the arrangements before you arrive.
Wine Experiences and Tastings
The offerings have different focuses: La Cave de Genève offers a tasting workshop featuring five wines and a tour of the barrel cellar. At Domaine du Paradis, a cellar tour is followed by a tasting of one to six wines from the selection. A platter of local cured meats and cheeses is served with it; reservations are required for this offering. For the tours and the workshop, confirm the respective arrangements before you arrive.
Comparing the options can help with your planning: at Devinière, the focus is on explanations from vine growing through to winemaking; at La Cave de Genève, it is on the workshop featuring five wines and the barrel cellar. Domaine du Paradis combines a cellar tour with a tasting and local accompaniments. This lets you choose based on the type of experience that interests you, without treating all the offerings as alike.
History and Special Dates
The history dates back to the early 10th century, when Satigny had a monastic complex whose priory was under the authority of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin d’Ainay in Lyon. In 1134, the religious complex came under the control of the Chapter of Saint-Pierre in Geneva. The two dates mark different stages in Satigny’s institutional history.
An archaeological dig in Peney uncovered a hoard of almost 3,000 bronze coins from the Late Roman Empire. In Peissy, the Feast of Saint Martin and the New Wine is held each year on a Saturday in November. Check the specific date and current programme before your visit.
Hiking and Nature
A hiking route passes through Satigny, Dardagny and Russin, traversing vineyards, villages and valley hollows. This lets you explore the landscape on foot across several places, rather than limiting the hike to a single vineyard. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.
The valley hollows of the Roulave and the Allondon are rich in exceptional flora and fauna and offer an opportunity to discover local biodiversity. Together with winegrowing and history, they provide a broad picture of the themes you can focus on during a stay in Satigny.
