Collonge-Bellerive: History, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Collonge-Bellerive
If you are considering Collonge-Bellerive as a destination, local history, culture, nature watching and named beach locations can offer different focal points for your stay. The municipality covers 610 hectares. Its main villages include Collonge and Vésenaz; Saint-Maurice, Bellerive and La Repentance are hamlets. Historic landmarks, L’Épicentre and the Centre Nature de la Pointe-à -la-Bise offer different ways to explore the area.
History and Heritage
Collonge became a municipality in 1792 and took the name Collonge-Bellerive in 1797. The parish of Collonge has been mentioned in texts since 1153; the parish of Saint-Maurice is documented from 1275 and was united with Collonge in the 16th century. Taken together, these dates mark different stages: early references to the parishes, their union in the 16th century and, finally, the municipality’s name in the late 18th century. A specific landmark of architectural heritage is the Château de Bellerive, which the State Council designated as heritage on 15 March 2023.
Nature and Beach Locations
The Centre Nature de la Pointe-Ă -la-Bise has an observation tower for birdwatching. The Centre nature de la Pointe-Ă -la-Bise (Pro Natura) also offers guided tours on request. If you are interested in nature watching, the tower is a specific point of interest; guided tours are available on request.
The named beaches also differ in their histories and the stories behind their names. Plage de la Nymphe takes its name from a sculpture by Natascha de Senger. A mermaid sculpture has stood on a rock in front of the beach since 1966. Plage de la Pointe-à -la-Bise is another named beach in Collonge-Bellerive. Plage de la Savonnière has a connection to everyday life: residents of Collonge traditionally used it to wash their laundry. The beaches thus range from an artistic motif and a named location to a traditional use.
Culture and Architecture
L’Épicentre is the cultural centre of the municipality of Collonge-Bellerive. Its hall hosts performances as part of the cultural season, which also features intimate concerts. The programme is seasonal; for specific performances, it is advisable to check the dates for your preferred travel period.
The Route des Châteaux et Maisons fortes offers a different perspective on the built environment. In the Collonge-Bellerive area, it runs between stately villas and village-style houses. The route can be walked or driven in either direction. This gives you different options: seasonal performances at the cultural centre or a route featuring villas and village architecture.
Sports and Play Areas
The Groupement intercommunal du Centre Sportif de Rouelbeau (GSR) offers facilities for numerous sports. The Centre Sportif de Rouelbeau also has a restaurant and a children’s play area. There are also public play areas in Vésenaz and Collonge. For an overview, the facilities can be grouped as follows: the sports facilities, restaurant and children’s play area are part of the Centre Sportif; the public play areas are listed for the two named locations. Collonge-Bellerive thus combines local history and cultural themes with nature watching, beach history and sports facilities.
