Céligny between Lake Geneva and the Jura
Accommodation in Céligny
Céligny lies between Lake Geneva and the Jura. The beach, nature reserves and historic buildings offer different ways to enjoy a stay.
Lakeshore and natural landscape
Céligny beach is open to everyone. The pebbly access to the lake slopes gently; a plancha grill is available for barbecuing. A few stand-up paddleboards are available to rent at the refreshment stand. Check in advance whether rentals are available on the day of your visit. The protected Roselière des Fourches can also be observed from the lake by boat.
The Bondex nature reserve covers 6.6 hectares and consists mainly of wet woodland; its landscape also includes meadows and wetlands. Almost 170 mushroom species have been recorded there. The wetlands are important for amphibian breeding and provide a resting place for migratory birds. The Early Purple Orchid may bloom in the meadows each spring, depending on conditions. Extensively managed meadows, low-intensity grazing and flower strips also form part of Céligny’s ecological network and support insects and small mammals.
Building history and traces of the past
The Temple de Céligny is a Romanesque church with a single-nave layout, buttresses and a bell wall on the façade. It has been protected since 30 December 1921. After a fire in 1991, the church was archaeologically investigated and partially restored and rebuilt in 1992–1993.
The Domaine de l’Elysée tells a different architectural story: the estate was established in the 17th century; by 1684, it already included a tall medieval house. The manor house was built in 1771, and the Domaine has been classified as cultural heritage since 24 March 1976. The Presbytère in the church district was completed in 1727. Its appearance follows the style of an 18th-century residence, with a hipped roof, carefully designed façades and a walled courtyard.
The Ancienne forge also evokes the former history of community life: civic, religious, economic and judicial life once converged at the former seat of the municipality. The old forge was converted into a residence. Bronze Age objects were found in the lake and in graves west of the village; remains of a Roman settlement include fragments of an aqueduct and mosaics. The old cemetery lies at Brassus and is lined with trees. Among the well-known graves is that of Richard Burton. When visiting, please respect the cemetery’s character as a burial place.
Local offerings and activities
CélAtelier offers artistic and cultural activities for young people and adults, including jewellery-making, crochet and painting workshops, as well as book evenings. All the honey from the Miellerie de Céligny is Demeter-certified, inspected by bio.inspecta and bears the apisuisse Label d’Or. To buy directly on site, you must make an appointment in advance; there are no regular opening hours. In the hamlet of Le Clos, vines, orchards and vegetable gardens have been cultivated on a favourably oriented slope since the Middle Ages.
