Vernier’s visitor attractions include signposted trails, green spaces along the Rhône and cultural offerings. For walks, the “La Balade de Vernier” provides clear guidance: the route leads from park to park through the city, its neighbourhoods and green spaces. It is considered accessible to everyone and can be completed in several stages. You can choose between the entire tour and splitting it into individual sections.

Walking trails and exercise

“La Balade de Vernier” is 15 kilometres long; the entire route is estimated to take around three hours and 30 minutes. One section runs along the Rhône riverbank and offers a striking panorama in a natural setting. Information panels along the way also share the history of the municipality and local anecdotes. The route thus combines exercise with insights into Vernier’s local history.

A promenade connects the neighbourhoods of Avanchets, Châtelaine, Les Libellules, Aïre-Le Lignon and Vernier-Village. Vernier is also connected to the Bois-des-Frères, the Presqu’île de Loëx and Lignon by the signposted Helsana Trails, which are suitable for walking, Nordic walking and running. The routes vary in length, cater to beginners as well as experienced athletes, and are accessible around the clock all year round.

Another place to exercise is the Zurich Parcours Vita: the 2.2-kilometre fitness trail has 14 stations for physical exercises and is located on Route du Bois-des-Frères in Lignon. The Ranches pump track is near École des Ranches on Rue du Village. Together, these facilities offer different ways to experience Vernier on foot and through exercise, without requiring the same kind of tour.

The Rhône riverbank and public green spaces

The Au Moulin leisure area lies between the Rhône and the Bois de la Grille and has direct access to the river. Its facilities include a picnic area, a sports area, a viewpoint and a landing stage. The footpaths along the Rhône riverbank are open to the public and are currently used by numerous walkers. The Bois de la Grille has been classified as a nature reserve since 2011. The Bois-des-Frères is near Le Lignon, extends to the Rhône riverbank and merges into the Bois de la Grille.

Vernier’s public outdoor spaces include parks, orchards, water play areas and walking trails; some have playgrounds and picnic areas. One example is Parc Chauvet-Lullin in the old village: it covers 10,000 square metres and has two children’s play areas as well as tables and benches. La Fermette offers something different. The animal park is home to heritage breeds of sheep and chickens from the ProSpecieRara Foundation and has an educational purpose. It is open to everyone, and visitors can get close to the animals. From there, you can enjoy a view of the Rhône and Le Lignon.

Local history and cultural attractions

Parc de l’Étang also combines a walking area with a historic feature: the park was created in the 19th century around a man-made pond set in a concrete basin. The walking areas were improved to link the pond, the park and the new neighbourhood of the same name. Vernier’s history also includes the Roman road between Geneva and Lyon, as well as finds of mules and horseshoes dating to the time of Julius Caesar.

The three municipal libraries offer cultural activities: they are free and open to everyone, and regularly host cultural events as well as opportunities to meet, take part in activities and learn. The Fête du Printemps is also a recurring event in the municipality’s calendar. Held every year in May, it features activities and stalls related to local agriculture and biodiversity. If your trip falls in this month, you can check the specific event dates in advance.
