Soral Ge: Vineyards, Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Soral Ge
Soral is a municipality shaped primarily by agriculture and viticulture. More than 83 percent of its 292.40 hectares are used for agriculture. Its distinctive layout is also a useful landmark: Soral consists of two clearly separated areas connected by a road. The highest point is at 456 metres. The south-western approach to Soral passes through vineyards, cultivated plots and hedgerows lined with tall trees.
Landscape and Hiking Trails
The Sur-La-Ville plateau is a plain covered with vineyards, offering views of the Salève, Mont-de-Sion, the Vuache and the Jura. The Soral–Thairy–Laconnex loop is considered an easy cross-border hiking route between France and Switzerland. In Soral, it leads to wine cellars where visitors can sample wines and offers views of the Salève, the Jura and the Vuache. Another trail connection is the Passerelle des Fourches, located in the municipalities of Soral and Avusy. It enabled the reopening of a hiking trail, a wine trail and a cross-border route to Veigy. The loop focuses on wine cellars and viewpoints; the footbridge is associated with the reopening of several types of trail.
Architecture and Local History
The silhouette of the Église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens marks the boundary between the built-up area and the surrounding landscape of Soral. The neoclassical building is considered to be of high architectural quality and forms a stylistically and architecturally cohesive ensemble with the adjacent Cure-école. The church was built in 1830–1831 and consecrated on 5 May 1831. Two stained-glass windows installed in 1902 depict Saint Peter receiving the keys and the mystery of the Incarnation. Its official classification under Geneva’s heritage protection system was registered on 30 December 1921.
The Pierre de Justice, associated with Soral, is considered a large erratic boulder that marked a judicial boundary. A cross was engraved on it in the 14th century. Following the redevelopment of the former La Feuillée landfill and gravel pit site, the Pierre de Justice returned to the municipality on 19 September 2009. The name Route de Soral was given after work on the topographic map of the Canton of Geneva in 1837–1838. The old road was called “chemin tendant à Genève”.
