Laholm between art, town history and coast
Accommodation in Laholm
Drawing art, medieval traces of the town and coastal landscapes give Laholm its many different sides. In the municipality, you can visit exhibitions, hike through natural areas or explore the sandy beach and its watersports zones. You can plan your stay around the themes that best match your travel interests.
Art and culture in Laholm
Teckningsmuseet in Laholm is the only museum of drawing art in the Nordic countries. It presents exhibitions by Nordic and international artists. Its public program includes workshops, lectures and concerts; exhibitions and programs may change. Laholms Keramikmuseum devotes its permanent exhibition to ceramics made in Laholm during the 20th century. Individual displays may change. The public art collection comprises 40 works, 26 of which belong to the municipality; collection figures like these may change.
RĂĄdhuset on Stortorget in the town center is also part of the cultural scene. Completed in 1794, it is open to the public and hosts cultural activities, including exhibitions. The more than 100-year-old theater in Laholm is a historic venue for theater and music performances. Its program may change over time.
Medieval traces and historic sites
Laholm’s town center is designated an area of national cultural significance. It includes the medieval town layout and the ruins of Lagaholm. Traces of the town’s medieval history can also be seen in its old street network and irregular town plan. Lagaholm is in the center, right next to the power station on the Lagan. The ruins are mentioned as early as 1231 in the land register of the Danish king Valdemar.
Another historic site is Lugnarohögen in Hasslöv: the Bronze Age burial mound can be viewed from the inside via an underground passage. Access is seasonal; check before your trip whether an interior visit is possible at the time of your visit.
Parks, dunes and forest trails
Stadsparken in central Laholm features a jungle stream, a savannah landscape and a woodland area. Large parts of the park are accessible to wheelchairs and walking frames. As on-site conditions may be important for planning, check them before your visit.
In the Hökafältet nature reserve, hikes cross open sand dunes and pass through dense pine forest. There is also a 2.5-kilometer trail, specially adapted for wheelchairs, walking frames and strollers. In Osbecks bokskogar, you’ll find several marked hiking loops among rare mosses and various prehistoric remains. The well-traveled Forsastigen follows the river for just over 2.5 kilometers. These trails offer different points of interest: dunes and pine forest, marked loops or a riverside route.
Coast, water and fishing
Laholm Municipality has a 12-kilometer sandy beach stretching from Båstad in the south to the mouth of the Lagan in the north. There are designated windsurfing zones along the beach. Skummeslövsstrand and Mellbystrand are particularly suitable for kitesurfing because the water is shallow. Water conditions and local guidance may change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest information before taking part in watersports.
Within Laholm Municipality, the Kattegattleden passes the coastal resorts of Skummeslövsstrand and Mellbystrand; route details may change. The fishing stretch on the Lagan at Laholm is approximately 8 kilometers long. The Lagan between the power station in Laholm and its mouth at the sea is considered one of Sweden’s best salmon fishing waters. Fishing rules and seasons may change; check the applicable conditions before fishing.
Practical information for your stay
Laholm’s tourist information office at Hästtorget provides maps and brochures and sells fishing permits and tickets for certain events. Its services may change. At Bröd & Co, everything is baked in a stone oven, from sourdough bread to cake bases; the business’s offerings may also change.
There are several ways to plan your stay: you can focus on exhibitions and architectural history, or on trails through dunes and forests, the beach and watersports. You can tailor your hotel stay to whichever of Laholm’s many sides interests you most.
