For a stay combining an interest in art and local history with time by the water, Laholm offers a range of options. The Teckningsmuseet, the historic features of Gamleby and the activities along the Lagan each offer something different. You can plan your visit around whether you are most interested in drawing, historic buildings or a walk by the river.

Art and culture in Laholm

The Teckningsmuseet is located in the centre of Laholm, at Hästtorget. It is the only museum in the Nordic countries dedicated to drawing. This gives the museum a distinctive profile among the town's cultural attractions. For a convenient visit, it is close to parking and has level access without stairs.

John Lundqvist created the Lagafontänen at Laholm's Stortorget in 1933. Laholm's collection of public art now includes just over 40 works; this number may change as artworks are added or removed. The Lagafontänen are a specific example of public art, while the Teckningsmuseet is dedicated to drawing.

Laholms teater is also located at Hästtorget. The building was constructed in the Art Nouveau style in 1913. Its programme includes children's performances, comedy shows, string concerts and rock ’n’ roll, among other things; offerings may change over time. If a particular performance is important to your trip, check the current programme in advance.

Gamleby and Lagaholm Castle

In Laholm's Gamleby, the medieval street network and irregular town layout have been preserved. The historic character is shaped not by a single building alone: the area's inherited layout is also part of its history. St. Clement's Church in Gamleby was built in 1225, and its tower dates from 1632. The two dates mark different building phases and help place the church's long history in context.

Lagaholm Castle was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the 17th century on the orders of Charles XI. Today, visitors can walk among the remains of the ruin. The remains were excavated and restored in the 1930s. The ruin is by the Lagan power station, where the old road to Halmstad crosses the river. Lagaholm Castle therefore offers a chance to explore its medieval origins, its later destruction and the remains visible today.

Walks and boat trips on the Lagan

In the centre of Laholm, you can walk along the Lagan and fish in its fish-rich waters. Another way to spend time by the river is aboard the more than 100-year-old S/S Lagaholm, which runs on the Lagan in summer from the town centre, near Rökeriet, to northern Mellbystrand. While walking and fishing are activities on the riverbank or in the water, the boat trip is a seasonal offering on the river. Departure arrangements may vary by season; check the timetable before your visit.

Getting around locally

Regional buses run from Laholm railway station to the town centre and the coast. As routes and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the latest timetable if you are planning a bus journey. For a quieter break or a convenient place to stop, visit Laholm City Library at HumlegĂĄngen 6. It offers books for borrowing, daily newspapers, computers, workspaces for studying and exhibitions.

You can choose which places to visit based on your interests: Gamleby and Lagaholm Castle offer insights into Laholm's architectural history, the Teckningsmuseet and public art provide a cultural focus, and along the Lagan you can choose between walking, fishing or a summer trip on the S/S Lagaholm.
