Halland: Coast, Forests and Culture
Accommodation in Halland
Long sandy beaches with dunes, forests and trails through varied landscapes define Halland. The region also has cultural sites where architecture, art and regional history each add their own character. When planning your trip, you can choose from nature experiences inland, coastal activities and cultural destinations.
Coast, Forests and Trails Through Nature
Halland’s coastal plain features long sandy beaches with dunes as far north as the northern parts of Halmstad Municipality. Farther north, the coastline becomes more varied: coastal meadows, cliffs, skerries and bays add to the landscape. The eastern forest region has naturally occurring coniferous and mixed forests, as well as open moorland with a distinct wilderness character.
The waymarked Hallandsleden currently runs for about 450 kilometres through Halland’s inland areas. Its eastern and western routes meet again in the Åkulla area. Ancient routes, archaeological monuments, historic buildings and signposted sights are found in the landscapes the trail passes through. The route and division into sections are also closely coordinated with public transport, making it easier to travel to and from the trail. Check current departure times before your trip.
Ă…kulla bokskogar is the collective name for about ten similar nature reserves in a contiguous area of Varberg Municipality. Together, the 20 lakes cover about one fifth of the area. There are nine largely interconnected trails for walking. Cross-country skiing is possible in winter, and there are several bathing spots in summer; conditions and facilities may vary by season.
Coastal natural areas also offer a range of activities: in the coastal dune landscape of Haverdal Nature Reserve, you can swim, walk, jog and ride horses. A sand dune there rises 36 metres above sea level, offering sweeping views of the reserve and its surroundings. In Hökafältet, a 2.5-kilometre trail is especially suitable for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. There is a bird tower in the northern part of the area at Lagaoset.
Explore Halland by Bike
Kattegattleden is Sweden’s first national cycle route. It covers 390 kilometres through distinctive coastal scenery, is divided into eight sections and runs along the entire Halland coast. Its coastal route is therefore quite different from Hallandsleden, which runs through the inland areas. When planning your trip, you can weigh up a cycling route along the coast against a hiking trail through the interior.
Architecture, Art and History
Tjolöholms slott was designed in the Tudor style, with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement. The castle is a cultural and historical setting unique in Sweden. The cultural landscape also includes numerous stone-paved walking trails, connecting the architectural theme with time spent in the countryside.
In Halmstad, Hallands Konstmuseum presents several exhibitions running in parallel, often based on its extensive collection of art from Halland. The collection includes painting, sculpture, prints, photography, crafts and architecture, among other works. The museum also offers family activities, such as storytelling for families, challenging art puzzles and free creative activities in the studio. The visitor programme may change.
Varberg Fortress has gradually been transformed into a place for cultural experiences and beautiful views. In Äskhult, four historic trails of different lengths, with stops along the way, lead through the history and cultural landscape of the village. The events programme includes themed walks, Midsummer celebrations, a children’s day, a harvest festival, a storytelling café and a Christmas market. Dates and seasonal availability may vary.
Regional Produce and Dining
Halland’s farm shops stock fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, various types of meat, fish and other regional products. At Ästad Vingård, you can taste organically grown wines from Halland. The vineyard has around 30,000 Solaris vines, as well as about a hundred organic trial plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. If you are planning a tasting, check booking options in advance.
Right next to Ästad Vingård, Restaurant ÄNG serves a Scandinavian tasting menu centred on regional ingredients; menus may change. For a day visit, Sinnenas Spa offers refreshing baths and sauna sessions. Here, too, if you are interested, it is a good idea to check booking options.
