Falkenberg lies on the Ätran, which flows through the Ätradalen and empties into the Kattegat in the city centre. The Old Town is easy to explore on foot, and you can see much of the centre in a day. At the same time, there is plenty to fill a longer stay, from historic architecture and museums to the beach, cycling routes and salmon fishing.

The Old Town and architectural history

In Gamla Stan, Falkenberg preserves crooked, winding wooden houses and a medieval church. S:t Laurentii is the oldest building in the city and has medieval origins. The church contains 16th-century wall paintings and 18th-century ceiling paintings—two distinct periods in a single building.

Tullbron also tells the story of Falkenberg’s architectural history: it was built between 1756 and 1761 and has been designated a listed building since 1984. The ruins of Falkenberg Castle preserve the remains of a defensive fortress built towards the end of the 13th century. Together, the church, bridge and castle offer different ways to explore the city’s history, while keeping their distinct periods of origin clear.

Museums and changing exhibitions

Rian is located downstream from Tullbron on the Ätran. Its building was constructed using timber framing in 1865 and originally served as a granary. Rian presents three new exhibitions each year, with changing themes ranging from industrial design to crafts. The programme also includes guided exhibition tours, lectures, workshops and themed city tours. As the programme and seasonal availability may change, check the current offerings before your visit.

Falkenbergs Hembygdsmuseum presents the city’s history from prehistoric times to the early 20th century. It therefore provides a broad historical overview, while Rian’s changing exhibitions explore a range of subjects. If you have a particular exhibition or event in mind, it’s worth checking the current programme before your visit.

Coast, cycle route and river

Skrea strand is a two-kilometre sandy beach, accessible on foot or by bicycle via seafront promenades. The Kattegattleden offers another way to experience the coast: its Falkenberg section runs from Morup in the north to Steninge in the south, mostly close to the coast and away from traffic. Check the latest route information before setting off in case of temporary diversions.

The salmon fishing area is also two kilometres long, but it is a different area: it extends from Hertingforsen to Hålan and is divided into three sections. You can walk between the fishing spots. Spinning, fly and traditional shrimp fishing are permitted; methods and rules may change seasonally, so check the current fishing regulations in advance. The restoration of Hertingforsen has made it possible for salmon, sea trout, eels and lampreys to live and reproduce in the Ätran, and to move between the river and the sea.

Sauna, recreation and food events

The sea sauna run by Falkenbergs Kallbadsvänner is open to members and the public. It is located at Bacchus väg 1, right by the sea, and is open year-round. Check booking availability before making plans. Vallarna offers a playground, parkour, an adventure course, a hobby horse track and a mini zoo; facilities and programmes may change.

Falkenbergs Matdagar also offers a glimpse into local food culture. The event has been held annually—with the exception of 2020—and has taken different forms. At the Falkenbergs Matdagar Roadtrip, around 30 food producers open their own visitor destinations over Easter. Dates and participating businesses may change from one edition to the next; check the latest information before making plans.
