Winding spiral staircases, dark cannon rooms and views over the Kattegat feature on guided tours of Varbergs Fästning. Seasonal availability of tours may vary. There are also coastal bathing spots, Kallbadhuset and insights into the town’s history—some of the varied attractions that make Varberg a rewarding place to visit.

Fortress and Museum

Varbergs Fästning is an important symbol of the history of Varberg and all of Halland. The first known building on the hill was a stone castle, completed around 1300. The fortress thus brings together early architectural history and its present-day significance as a historical symbol.

Hallands kulturhistoriska museum is located in the fortress; access is through the castle courtyard. The Bocksten Man is the museum’s main attraction. The Borgen exhibition offers a different experience, with its medieval-inspired play environment. The museum therefore features both a historical exhibit and an environment that playfully evokes the Middle Ages.

Coast, bathing spots and Kallbadhuset

Along the seafront promenade, you can swim from both bathing jetties and the beach. Apelviken has long stretches of sandy beach, and windsurfing and beach volleyball are available there. The season and weather can affect conditions for these activities. Plan accordingly, especially if you have a particular activity in mind.

A new section of the seafront promenade connects Apelviken with the centre of Varberg, making it easier to reach the bay on foot or on wheels. As the route may change, check its course before planning your visit. This section of the promenade can therefore be considered a direct connection when finding your way between Apelviken and the centre.

Today’s Kallbadhuset dates from 1903 and is the third cold bathhouse on this site. Year-round, you can take a dip in the sea and then visit the sauna with views of the Kattegat; operating conditions may vary. Even if you don’t want to swim, you can enjoy the architecture, the sea and views of the fortress over fika. Café availability may vary.

Trails and other places to visit

Subbeleden is described as the southern extension of the seafront promenade. Åkullaleden starts in the town of Varberg and is approximately 25 kilometres long. If you’re planning a longer outing, you can take both the starting point and approximate length of this route into account. Trail conditions may vary.

Badhuset Pingvinen is located in the Håsten recreation area. Its bathing facilities include a 50-metre pool; under the same roof, there is also a swimming pool, an ice rink, a gym and a café. Pool arrangements and facilities may change, so it’s worth checking the current setup before your visit.

Nearby Naturum Getterön provides information about wildlife and nature, with a particular focus on birds. Grimeton offers a glimpse of technological history: it is home to the world’s last complete, operational Alexanderson longwave transmitter. Grimeton Radio Station was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Guided tours provide an engaging, in-depth introduction to the history, people and technology of this World Heritage site. In late summer and autumn, the Day Shift tour is available on Saturdays. As the visitor programme is planned seasonally, check the dates in advance.
