Explore Hishult through a range of themes: a historic farmstead, modern art, church architecture and marked walking trails. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether cultural history, exhibitions or outdoor activities should be your main focus. Places and trails in Hishult and the surrounding area offer different ways to explore these interests.

GammelgĂĄrden and ways of life in the past

Gammelgården is a four-winged farmstead dating from the 18th century. The residential building has an open roof structure in the South Götaland style. The complex is considered a good example of a traditional, fully enclosed four-winged farmstead in the South Halland style. The farmstead’s layout and the residential building’s architectural style provide different architectural accents: the enclosed courtyard represents the South Halland form, while the open roof structure is associated with the South Götaland style. Gammelgården also offers insight into life and culture in earlier times.

The farmstead also plays a role as a venue for community activities: recurring celebrations, as well as activities and guided tours for school classes and other groups, are held there. Building history and ways of life in the past meet here with today’s use for groups and community events.

Modern art in Hishult

Since it was founded in 1994, Konsthallen Hishult has aimed to showcase outstanding modern art from the North, particularly from Sweden. It presents six major exhibitions each year. The art gallery is surrounded by a sculpture park, a Zen garden, Grafikrummet and BoklĂĄdan.

This focus clearly differs from Gammelgården’s perspective on ways of life in the past: the art gallery is dedicated to modern art with a Nordic, particularly Swedish, focus. If you are weighing art against cultural history when choosing your destination, these two themes offer different perspectives on Hishult.

Church, architecture and historical finds

Hishult’s present-day church was built in 1901–1902 and designed in the Art Nouveau style. A baptismal font made from heartwood is a Renaissance work and is considered one of the finest of its kind in Halland. Important for your plans: the church is currently closed.

An archaeological find is also part of the area’s history. During excavations in the spring and summer of 1999, the remains of a so-called bell-casting pit were found immediately outside the church wall, to the east of the church. The find adds another historical aspect from the church’s immediate surroundings to the building’s history.

Marked walking trails and landscapes

The yellow-marked Hishultsslingan trail passes through moors and wetlands near GammelgĂĄrden. The route is maintained by Hishults Byalag. Three marked walking loops also start from GammelgĂĄrden, passing through landscapes and forests and crossing bridges. Hishultsslingan and the three loops differ both in number and in the landscapes described: wetlands define the Hishultsslingan route, while the loops include forests and bridges.

Sjöboholm and the history of the surrounding area

Near Hishult, on a promontory in Lake Oxhultasjön, lie the remains of Sjöboholm Manor, whose roots go back to the Middle Ages. In the 15th century and for most of the 16th century, Sjöboholm was the main seat of Itzholte län. Its medieval origins and its later role as a main seat mark different historical periods in the history of the manor and its surroundings.
