Valladolid: Art, Literature and Film Culture
Accommodation in Valladolid
Valladolid lies in the centre of Castilla y LeĂłn on the River Pisuerga; the River Esgueva also flows through the city. Literature, art, film culture and historic architecture offer different ways to shape a stay. As you plan, you can consider which of these themes you want to define your trip.
Campo Grande and the city’s green side
Campo Grande is Valladolid’s most historically significant central green space. It was formerly also known as Campo de la Verdad, Campo de Marte and Campo de la Feria. The park complements the city’s collections, buildings and literary associations with a different focus. If you don’t want to plan your trip around museums and architecture alone, you can add Campo Grande as a destination in its own right.
Literature and distinctive ways to visit
The Cervantes House and Museum connects a specific historic site with the writer’s work. When the court of Felipe III stayed in Valladolid, Miguel de Cervantes lived there from 1601 to 1606; during that time, he wrote several of his Exemplary Novels. The house is the only surviving Cervantes house in Spain.
The Ruta del Hereje offers a different literary perspective. It takes you to places featured by Miguel Delibes in his historical novel El Hereje. While the Cervantes House connects the writer’s biography with a specific period, this route focuses on settings that feature in a novel.
The Ruta arqueológica focuses on the visitor experience: it offers guided visits to places in Valladolid that are not normally open to the public. If you’d like to include this experience in your plans, check in advance whether a tour is available.
Art, collections and film culture
The Museo Nacional de Escultura has more than 6,000 objects dating from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century. The museum also features Spanish religious polychrome wood sculpture from the 15th to the 18th century. The collection’s broad timespan and this specific focus offer two different points of interest for a visit.
The Museum of Contemporary Art offers a comprehensive overview of Spanish art and its development from 1918 to the present day. It also hosts temporary exhibitions that focus mainly on new artistic approaches; the specific exhibition programme may change. The Museo de Arte Africano Arellano Alonso of the UVa has a permanent display of art from sub-Saharan Africa. This includes traditional coins, figurative terracotta sculptures and objects from the Kingdom of Oku in Cameroon. These collections offer a different thematic approach from the overview of Spanish art.
Film culture is also represented: Espacio Seminci is a permanent centre for film culture and documentation of the Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid (Seminci). The cultural offering thus includes not only works of art and collections but also the history of a film festival.
Architecture and a culinary highlight
Valladolid’s main square, the Main Square, was the first geometrically regular square laid out in Spain. The imposing Elizabethan Gothic façade of the Iglesia de San Pablo stands out and is known as a “retablo en piedra” (“stone altarpiece”). The tower of the Iglesia de San MartĂn offers a different architectural focus: it illustrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Together, these examples show two different ways to explore the city’s architectural history.
For food lovers, Alquimia is a specific highlight. The restaurant in the historic centre is known for creative haute cuisine shaped by a diverse mix of culinary cultures. If you’d like to include it in your plans, check what’s currently on offer before visiting.
