Canalejas de Peñafiel – Church, Wine and Festivals
Accommodation in Canalejas de Peñafiel
Canalejas de Peñafiel brings together sacred architecture and a traditional streetscape with religious festivals, wine experiences and truffle activities. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: take a specific festival date into account or plan around the architecture and culinary offerings.
Church, townscape and landscape
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the 12th century and is built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. The parish church has a Gothic tower dating from the 15th century; its main altar is a Baroque work from the 17th century. The Romanesque-Gothic design, Gothic tower and Baroque altar belong to different periods, giving the sacred architecture several specific historical reference points.
The image of the Virgin Mary, which is highly venerated in Canalejas de Peñafiel, is kept at the Santuario del Olmar. The streetscape also contributes to the town’s architectural character: it is traditionally laid out like a maze, and numerous well-preserved stone houses are characteristic of Castilian vernacular architecture. The sacred buildings and stone houses thus represent two distinct aspects of the local architectural heritage.
Canalejas de Peñafiel lies on the banks of the Duero and almost at the top of the plateau, overlooking the Duratón. The riverbank, elevated setting and views towards the Duratón add a scenic perspective to the historic townscape.
Festivals with distinct character
During the Romería del Olmar, the image of the Virgin Mary is carried from the church to the Ermita on the first weekend of July. The Romería de la Virgen del Olmar includes a Mass at the Ermita, an outdoor meal and dancing. The Romería and the festivals in honour of the Asunción bring residents and visitors together each year.
Corpus Christi includes religious ceremonies and verbenas. The festival in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción takes place on 8 September and features verbenas, various games and a large chocolate festival for residents and visitors. The Romería combines the journey between the church and the Ermita with a celebration at the destination; the September festival offers a different focus, with games and a chocolate festival.
Wine-growing and truffle experiences
Some traditional lagares, as well as much of the traditional vineyards and underground wine cellars, remain from the area’s wine-growing past. The longer tour offered by Bodegas Olimarum includes a visit to an old lagar typical of the town and a stop at an old underground wine cellar. The tour thus highlights two specific elements of the local wine tradition.
RF Trufas offers truffle tourism in Canalejas de Peñafiel. This includes a hands-on truffle hunt in the countryside with the dog Lucas and a tasting of freshly harvested truffles and local products in a renovated underground wine cellar. While the longer tour offered by Bodegas Olimarum focuses on lagares and wine cellars, the experience offered by RF Trufas combines a countryside hunt with a tasting.
