Accommodation in Mojados
Mojados lies on the banks of the Cega, a tributary of the Duero. Three distinct themes can guide your trip planning: Mudéjar architecture, the history of Carlos V and the river landscape. The town’s history can be traced through its buildings from the 13th to the 17th century; the museum and historical reenactment explore the theme of Carlos V. The Senda del Cega offers another perspective as a circular trail through the Cega Valley. You can shape your stay around cultural heritage, history or an excursion into the countryside.
Cultural heritage and architectural history
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is one of the most important examples of regional Mudéjar architecture. Construction began at the end of the 13th century and continued into the 14th century. The Iglesia de Santa María is also a Mudéjar building dating from the 14th century; later alterations were completed in the mid-15th century. The two churches can be compared in terms of style and construction period: the building phase of San Juan Bautista ran from the late 13th into the 14th century, while the later-completed alterations are also part of Santa María’s architectural history.
The Casa-Palacio Conde de la Patilla was built at the end of the 15th century on Plaza de Santa María. The Palacio Viejo del Postigo dates from the 15th century, was recently restored and was once part of a single complex with the Casa-Palacio. This former connection broadens the view from the churches to the architectural history of the palaces.
The Puente Viejo adds a different historical dimension: it was built in 1575 on the orders of Felipe II and designed by the master builder Juan de Nantes. At the Santuario Nuestra Sra. de Luguillas, sacred architecture meets the Cega’s riverside setting. The 17th-century Baroque building is surrounded by nature and is known for its bell gable and the frescoes in the Camarín. The Ermita Santo Cristo del Humilladero adds a 17th-century building made of stone and brick; crosses mark the Stations of the Cross outside. The buildings described here therefore differ in both their dates and distinctive details, from the bridge’s named designer to bell gables, frescoes and outdoor crosses.
Carlos V and historical themes
The Museo Carlos V is the first museum in Spain devoted exclusively to Carlos V. Interactive educational activities provide insights into the legacy of Carlos V, his territories, the design of his coat of arms and his ancestors. The topics thus range from his history to the lands and symbols associated with him.
Since 2007, the Ayuntamiento de Mojados has organized a historical reenactment and theatrical performance of Prince Carlos’s visit and stay in Mojados in 1517. Mojados is also part of the “Itinerario Cultural Europeo de la Ruta del Emperador Carlos V.” The museum, reenactment and cultural route each offer a different focus: interactive educational activities, a specific historical episode and inclusion in a named European cultural route.
The Cega Valley, green spaces and circular trail
Nature and landscape in Mojados also have several points of interest. The Albosancho y Cobatilla municipal pine forest was established in the Middle Ages. In the town centre, El Chorrero is among the parks and gardens. A municipal pine forest established in the Middle Ages and a green space in the town centre thus sit side by side, while retaining their distinct character.
The PRC-VA 30 Senda del Cega runs through the Cega Valley between dryland and irrigated farmland; the landscape is flanked by the plateaus of the limestone uplands. The route’s river corridor includes a relatively well-preserved river ecosystem of high ecological value, which has been included in the Natura 2000 network. The route description therefore brings together agricultural land and a river environment of ecological value.
The PRC-VA 30 Senda del Cega is a 10.5-kilometre circular trail that begins and ends near Puente Viejo and Fuente del Caño in Mojados. For planning purposes, its circular layout and length are the key details; check trail conditions before setting out. This makes the hike a distinct focus alongside the buildings and the history of Carlos V.
