Olmedo offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: church art and Mudéjar buildings, regional cuisine and wine, and routes connected with the landscape and historic urban setting. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to decide first which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Cultural highlights include architectural and artistic features in three churches and scale models of regional Mudéjar buildings. Culinary offerings include named specialities and wine experiences; for routes, distinguish between a section that passes wetlands and a pilgrimage route into the historic centre.

Churches, Artworks and Mudéjar Architecture

The Iglesia de Santa María del Castillo houses an altarpiece from the mid-16th century attributed to the assembler Gaspar de Tordesillas. An altarpiece is an altar panel. The Iglesia de San Miguel houses a Plateresque altarpiece by Gaspar de Tordesillas; the church also has an attached chapel dedicated to the Virgen de la Soterraña.

A Romanesque apse survives from the Iglesia de San Andrés and is one of the best-preserved of its time. The church is currently used as an open-air auditorium. This means that a surviving Romanesque architectural feature and its present-day use as an auditorium coexist there—a different point of interest from the altarpieces in Santa María and San Miguel.

The Parque Temático del Mudéjar de Castilla y León features around twenty scale models based on notable Mudéjar buildings in the region. In this way, the region’s architectural styles are represented on a smaller scale, adding a distinct perspective on Mudéjar architecture to the churches’ art and architectural history.

Regional Cuisine and Wine

Olmedo is part of the Ruta del Vino de Rueda, which is included in Spain’s Rutas del Vino de España wine routes. Bodega y Viñedos La Mejorada is located in Olmedo’s former Hieronymite monastery. Bodega La Soterraña offers a guided winery visit with a tasting of three wines and an aperitif. If you plan to take up this specific offer, confirm the reservation details in advance.

Olmedo’s traditional handmade pastries include Mudejaritos, an almond pastry, and Tortón de mosto. Lechazo is considered Olmedo’s most important dish.

Routes Between the Landscape and the Historic Centre

The third and final stage of the Camino Natural Vía Verde del Valle del Eresma ends just under 600 metres from Olmedo. The Laguna de Caballo de Alba can be seen along this stage. It is part of the LIC Lagunas de Coca y Olmedo, whose numerous smaller wetlands, some of them saline, provide refuge for many bird species. If you plan to walk or cycle this stage, check the route conditions in advance.

A pilgrimage route leads into Olmedo’s historic centre, where remains of the former city walls have been preserved. The routes therefore differ in their points of interest: the Vía Verde stage passes the Laguna de Caballo de Alba, while the pilgrimage route leads into the historic urban setting.
