Discover Villamarciel on the Duero
Accommodation in Villamarciel
Villamarciel combines river meadows along the Duero with a section of the Camino Natural del Duero and a church with several historical layers. Two annual patron saint festivities also give the town specific dates throughout the year. When planning a stay, you can therefore focus on different things: the riverside landscape, the route, the building’s history or one of the festivals. Looking for a hotel in Villamarciel? These themes can help you define the purpose of your trip more precisely.
River meadows and the Camino Natural del Duero
Villamarciel lies between several river meadows formed by the Duero, including the Vega de Aniago and the Vega de Villamarciel. While these names locate the landscape, the Camino Natural del Duero offers a perspective on the town from the route: Villamarciel lies on Stage 15. The Tordesillas–Villamarciel section of the Camino Natural del Duero runs along the right bank of the Duero. The route leads to an Embarcadero (landing place), used for fishing and canoeing, and then continues upriver towards Villamarciel. The river meadows and the course of the stage thus offer different points of reference for understanding the town in terms of its landscape and its place on the route.
The church and its historical periods
The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves has a building history with several clearly distinct periods. The church was originally built in the 14th century; only the tower remains of the earlier church. The present-day building dates from the 20th century. This clearly distinguishes the medieval origins from the current building. The furnishings add further historical markers. The presbytery, or altar area, contains a Cristo dating from the 16th century. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de las Nieves also has a Retablo de Santa Margarita de Escocia from the 17th century, with a painting from the 19th century. The surviving tower points to the earlier building, while the furnishings have their own, in some cases considerably later, dates. The building history and the works of art should therefore be considered distinct but related aspects: the dates of the furnishings do not date the present-day church building.
Patron saint festivities throughout the year
The festival calendar includes two patron saint dates. From May 1 to 3, Villamarciel holds festivities in honour of San Felipe and Santiago; on August 5, the patron saint festival of Nuestra Señora Virgen de las Nieves is celebrated. This gives visitors two different opportunities to plan a trip: a multi-day period in May and a festival day in August. The exact programme may vary. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with one of the festivals, check the latest event information before travelling.
Restaurant and rest area
Restaurante Ruta 62 serves breakfast, tapas, portions and combination dishes; the offerings may change. The CRED EL CARRO petrol station in Villamarciel has a rest area. If you are making specific plans around either of these places, check the latest information from the establishment in question.
