Pesquera de Duero brings together a history of winemaking, sacred architecture, and a connection to the GR-14. If you are looking for a hotel in Pesquera de Duero, these different themes can help you get a sense of what a stay here might be like.

Townscape between the Duero and the wine cellar district

Pesquera de Duero was founded on the riverbank at an unspecified time in the Middle Ages; the area had already been inhabited in prehistoric times. The historic street plan is irregular. Plaza Mayor is in the center, while Plazuelas del Postigo is to the west and del Cura to the east. The settlement’s history is reflected in specific landmarks across the townscape.

El Arco was the main entrance through the town’s enclosed urban structure. An inscription gives 1630 as the year it was completed. The building bears the coat of arms of the Zúñiga family, the Dukes of Béjar and lords of the town. The Cotarro de las bodegas, also known as Cuesta de San Pedro, is an underground wine cellar district excavated in a clay hill steeply cut into by the Duero. Plaza Mayor, El Arco, and Cotarro thus represent three different landmarks: the central square, the historic main entrance, and the wine cellar district in the clay hill.

Parque de El Batán is a small recreational area. It was created in the early 1980s, next to the road to Peñafiel, on a stretch of the former bed of the Piñel stream.

Winemaking and historic buildings

Pesquera de Duero has preserved buildings associated with winemaking methods handed down since antiquity. These include lagares, where grapes were trodden and pressed by foot to obtain must. The lagares were independent rectangular buildings: one basin held the grapes, while a smaller one collected the must. Their layout illustrates the stages of the process, from pressing the grapes to collecting the must.

Bodega Ascensión Repiso Bocos produces and ages organic wines in the Semicrianza, Crianza, and Autor categories. Another historic connection is Bodega Tinto Pesquera: its first bodega was a lagar dating from the 16th century. The wine categories produced and a historic building from the history of a named winery thus represent different aspects of the local wine culture.

Churches, architecture, and festivals

The Baroque main altar in the church of San Juan Bautista has a central section with four Solomonic columns decorated with leaves and grapes. The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Rubialejos was built between 1693 and 1726. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the single-nave interior has a barrel vault, and the dome with lantern is decorated with stucco work and paintings. The two buildings have different architectural focal points: columns and ornamentation on the altar, and the floor plan, vault, and dome at the Santuario.

The festival in honor of the Apostle at the Ermita de San Pedro includes a mass around June 29 and a procession carrying the saint’s image through the local wine cellar district. The San Juan festival is celebrated in late June; a religious service is followed by a traditional procession with folk dances. If you are traveling for either festival, check the exact event dates in advance.

Walking route and trip planning

The section of the GR-14 associated with Pesquera de Duero is Stage 12, between Peñafiel and Quintanilla de Onésimo. A 106-meter-long wooden footbridge in the Área Recreativa El Verde connects Pesquera de Duero to the GR-14. The stage number places the route between two named towns; the bridge separately describes the local connection to the long-distance trail. If you would like to include walking and winemaking history in your trip plans, these details can help you get a sense of the destination.
