Serrada: Wine Landscape, Art and Culture
Accommodation in Serrada
Serrada is characterized by an agricultural wine landscape, hiking and several cultural sites. The Sendero Entre Viñas trail runs through the wine landscape; in the town, cultural attractions also include a parish church with protected status, an open-air museum and the Museo Parroquial. A winery based in Serrada, cheese-making and recurring festivals also add their own distinctive touches. Your trip can therefore focus on outdoor activities, wine and food culture, or sacred history.
Hiking through the wine landscape
The PR-VA 45 Sendero Entre Viñas is a linear hiking trail from Bodegas de Serrada to Serrada. The route is 7.6 kilometres long; the walk takes about 1.5 hours, and the difficulty level is low. Allow roughly this amount of time and check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change. The route passes through Serrada’s agricultural wine landscape, which contributes to the production of quality wine in the D.O. Rueda.
Wine and cheese
Val de Vid has been based in Serrada since 1996 and is a quality winery. In its winemaking, it combines advanced technology with traditional methods; it produces white wines and Verdejo wines. This shows the connection to wine both in the landscape you walk through and in the work of a local winery.
Another culinary facet is the cheese made by QueserĂa Campoveja. The cheesemaker produces an artisan Castilian cheese from raw sheep’s milk. Unlike the winery, the focus here is on milk as the starting product and on artisan production. Wine and cheese thus offer two different perspectives on the produce that complements Serrada’s thematic profile.
Art and sacred culture
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the monument category. The Museo de Pintura y Escultura al Aire Libre de Serrada offers a different cultural format: along the Paseo del Arte, it integrates murals and sculptures into the townscape. The church is notable for its protected status, while the open-air museum connects painting and sculpture with the urban space.
The Museo Parroquial houses the sculpture “San Miguel Arcángel” by Gregorio Fernández, as well as liturgical silverwork. The liturgical silverwork links the collection to church practice, while the sculpture stands out as a work by a named artist.
Chapel and festival calendar
On the outskirts of town, the Ermita de la Virgen de la Moya stands on the site of a former settlement; it is the seat of the CofradĂa de Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Moya. A romerĂa to this hermitage takes place on 1 May. Its location, the former settlement and the festival date connect the site with Serrada’s religious tradition.
The Fiesta de la Vendimia is celebrated in October. At the XLI Fiesta de la Vendimia, the ritual “Quema de la madre” was performed, symbolizing the end of the previous harvest. If you want to plan your trip around the festivals, check that year’s programme in advance.
