A belt of preserved fortification remains surrounds Badajoz’s historic center and now serves as a public city park. Individual structures also tell the story of the city’s fortifications: from a tower dating to 1169 to the first bastion element, built in 1641. A guided birdwatching tour on the Guadiana offers another perspective on the city.

Fortification remains and notable buildings

Fuerte de San Cristóbal dates to 1641. It was the first bastion element built as part of Badajoz’s fortifications. The Torre de la Atalaya, popularly known as Torre de Espantaperros, was built in 1169 under the Almohads. Its octagonal ground plan describes the shape of the tower as seen from above, while its height of 30 meters provides a second, vertical measure. The date, ground plan and height offer different clues for understanding the building.

Puerta de Palmas and Puente de Palmas also illustrate different forms of fortified architecture. The gate stands opposite the bridge and is flanked by two cylindrical towers with battlements. The bridge is almost 600 meters long, with fortifications and defensive structures at both ends. Together, a fortified gate and a long bridge secured at each end represent distinct architectural features.

The Guadiana and birdwatching

Badajoz lies on the banks of the Guadiana, about six kilometers from Portugal. Along the riverbanks, the guided birdwatching tour “Badajoz, Ciudad de las Aves” passes through the urban ZEPA Azud del Guadiana. The focus is on birds and the river landscape; the activity is also explicitly guided. Visitors interested in nature observation can consider this alongside the historic buildings as another distinct aspect of Badajoz.

Theater and museum history

Teatro López de Ayala opened in 1886 and was associated with the continuous presence of lyric and dramatic companies from Spain. In 1897, it became the city’s first movie theater. Until the early 1930s, film screenings were combined with musical and dramatic programs. These milestones show that its history encompasses theater and music companies as well as early film screenings.

At the Museo de la Catedral de Badajoz, the content is presented in Spanish, Portuguese and English. For visitors who use one of these languages, this is a practical consideration when choosing to visit the museum.

Wine route and breakfast event

The Ruta del Vino y el Cava Ribera del Guadiana offers a gastronomic perspective on the province of Badajoz. It covers almost twenty municipalities and includes winery visits, tastings and meals paired with wine. These are different ways to explore wine and gastronomy along the route.

Badajoz also hosts “Badajoz, Capital del Desayuno” every year. The event supports gastronomic tourism and the promotion of local businesses, positioning the city as a breakfast destination. The specific editions and dates vary.

Dates and architectural features help put the city’s history into context; for a trip centered on the breakfast event, however, the date of the specific edition is what matters. You can plan your stay in Badajoz around whichever focus is most important for your trip.
