La Roca De La Sierra: Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in La Roca De La Sierra
La Roca De La Sierra combines buildings with different historical connections and a landscape shaped by dehesa, lagoons and Mediterranean woodland. There are several ways to plan your trip: focus on the parish church and medieval bridge, the two dolmens, the La Chiquita festival or paths through the Dehesa Boyal. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
Buildings from different periods
The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Prado dates from the 15th century and has Gothic portals. A later phase of construction can be seen in the vault: after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, it was rebuilt toward the end of the 18th century. The building’s history therefore encompasses both the church’s origins and a much later change to the vault. These two periods help place the building in context beyond a single date.
The Puente Medieval can also be viewed through its history and architectural features. The medieval bridge has Roman origins and three stone arches. It also offers one of the most attractive views of La Roca De La Sierra. Its origins, form and view make it a landmark in its own right alongside the parish church.
The dolmens each have different features to note. Cueva del Monje has the beginning of a corridor, measuring three metres in length, and stones up to two metres high. At Cueva del Moro, the entire ground plan is preserved, with the exception of the false dome. In comparison, Cueva del Monje draws attention for its corridor and measurements, while Cueva del Moro is notable for its preserved ground plan and missing feature.
La Chiquita on November 1
The La Chiquita festival takes place on November 1. Residents go from house to house collecting food, then head to the countryside to share what they have gathered at an outdoor meal. This sequence gives the festival a distinctly communal character. As the annual programme may vary, it is advisable to check the dates and arrangements before your trip.
Dehesa Boyal and nature trails
The Dehesa Boyal de la Sierra de la Roca covers just under 1,400 hectares of dehesa landscape and Mediterranean woodland. The area is dotted with lagoons and crossed by the Rivera de Lorianilla. Both the expanse of the landscape and its waterways shape the scenery: its features include lagoons, the watercourse and a variety of landscapes.
Trails run through different parts of the Dehesa Boyal. Visitors can explore the extensive landscape and get closer to the bird species found there. Nature lovers can therefore take both the landscape and birdlife into account when planning their visit. Trail conditions can change; check your route before setting out.
The Camino Natural del corredor Cáceres-Badajoz is a signposted nature route that includes La Roca De La Sierra. It offers both a circular and a linear route. The route type is therefore a clear point of difference when choosing between them. As route conditions and signage can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
