Dehesa and Natural Landscape
The natural surroundings of Salvaleón are hilly and characterized by dehesa, scrubland, lush, moisture-rich vegetation and numerous caves. Monte Porrino is a 1,700-hectare public dehesa within the municipality. The area lies between the Sierra Santamaría, the Sierra Monsalud and the Sierra Barbellido. It is also home to La Piedra Montá, a natural monument: a large granite boulder balanced on a granite slab. The Quejigos del Chorrero in Salvaleón are designated as an Árbol Singular.
The Ruta Circular Monte Porrino is a flat circular hike through the municipal dehesa among holm oaks and cork oaks. Monte Porrino also offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, observing flora and fauna, donkey rides and visiting the Centro de Interpretación de la Dehesa. Confirm activities and packages locally. The Ruta de los Buitres passes through a dehesa to the vulture rocks and offers views of Nogales and its reservoir. These varied descriptions make nature and landscape a defining theme of a stay in Salvaleón.
Hiking Trails and Events
The Ruta del Platonal starts and ends at Plaza de España. The circular route includes two small hills: one at the beginning and the other almost at the end. It is considered not very difficult, though the perceived difficulty may depend on conditions. The stated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes; your individual walking time may differ.
The annual Ruta de los 12 Apóstoles attracts more than 1,000 hikers. It takes its name from twelve centuries-old cork oaks, seven of which remain. Dishes made with chickpeas and ham tastings are often organized afterward; schedules and food may vary. The Asociación de Senderismo de Salvaleón El Encinar organizes several other hikes each year through different landscapes in the area. In Salvaleón, La Fuga de Menacho combines a hiking route with a theatrical performance in February. As the annual program may vary, it is advisable to check the dates before your trip.
The Romería de San Isidro begins with a Mass at the chapel on the municipal estate of Monte Porrino. Residents and visitors then eat meat, cured meats and other typical dishes there, cooked over a fire and accompanied by music. It is also worth checking the program for the relevant year.
Buildings and History
The parish church of Santa Marta dates back to the 16th century. Its main altar is a Neoclassical work to which the sculptors Francisco Gómez and Salvador Muñoz and the painter Sánchez Picaldo contributed. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Aguasantas was formerly a monastery of the Discalced Franciscans. In the 17th century, the monastery was relocated to Salvatierra de los Barros.
The megalithic complex of Salvaleón is also part of the town’s cultural history. On the municipal estate of Monteporrino, it includes up to 13 burial mound features. These include the enclosed Dolmen Monteporrino I, also known as Dolmen El Toril, located 200 metres to the west. On a nearby hill near Salvaleón, remnants of the old castle also remain, including a damaged, imposing square stone tower and some adjoining walls.
Dishes from Salvaleón
Dishes prepared by Salvaleón residents include Caldereta de cerdo, Tapa de peladilla, Pringue colorá and various cured meats. At the Ruta de los 12 Apóstoles, the hike may be followed by tastings; the food and schedule are not the same every year. Depending on your interests, you can get to know the area through its landscape, architectural history or cuisine.
