Villanueva de la Serena can be explored through specific points of interest: historic buildings, museum collections, cultural events and paths through a river landscape. You can shape your stay around the themes that interest you at these different places and through the activities on offer.

History and Architecture

The Casa de la Tercia was built in 1310 and housed the Mesa Maestral of the Order of Alcántara. The building is currently undergoing restoration. Check whether visits are possible before you go. The Monasterio de San Benito, also known as the Palacio Prioral, was commissioned in 1494 by Juan de Zúñiga y Pimentel, Grand Master of the Order of Alcántara.

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a monument designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2021. It was built from granite in the Herrerian style. Its present appearance dates to a reconstruction in 1608; the tower was completed in 1634. At the church, you can take in both the materials and architectural style, as well as two distinct dates in its construction history.

At the entrance, the coat of arms of the Casa Consistorial points to its partial completion in 1583. The lower section has an arcaded courtyard with three large round arches resting on Ionic columns; a continuous balcony runs along the upper floor. The Casa de los Bolos takes its name from the spherical granite balls on the upper-floor façade. The coat of arms of the House of Mendoza is above its main entrance. The Edificio La Jabonera, in turn, is an example of 19th-century industrial architecture.

Museums and Collections

The Centro Museístico Charo Acero houses three collections in a mansion dating from the late 19th century. The building was first used as a private residence and later served as the city’s Cámara Agraria for many years. The Museo de Mineralogía de Villanueva de la Serena collection comprises about 2,000 rock and mineral specimens, mainly from Extremadura and Spain. The collection was donated by José Antonio Garrido, who had collected the pieces himself.

The Museo del Traje “Colección Eduardo Acero” features 35 wedding dresses from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum collections therefore offer different points of interest: the Mineralogy Museum focuses on rocks and minerals, while the Traje Museum showcases historic garments. The collection sizes given also offer a concrete sense of how differently their holdings are described.

Festivals and Cultural Events

La Carrerita takes place on Easter Sunday. It was recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Extremadura by an order dated March 6, 2007. The Festival Internacional de Teatro de Calle runs for three days and brings national and international theater companies to Villanueva de la Serena. Check the event dates before your trip.

The Feria de la Tortilla de Patatas program includes stalls and tastings, competitions for professionals, and gastronomic galas. The Pequechef workshops are for children: they learn about the essential ingredients and make a tortilla de patatas themselves. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the program for the next edition in advance.

Riverside Paths and Nature

The Camino Natural Vía Verde Vegas del Guadiana connects Villanueva de la Serena with Logrosán and provides access to a major wintering area for cranes in the dehesas. The cranes are therefore associated with the winter season. The Villanueva de la Serena–Entrerríos route follows the Zújar River to its beach. It passes through vegetation, along a stony path and through scenic landscapes. The route also follows a canal before continuing along a cycle path.

Nearby is Playa de EntrerrĂos, a river beach on the ZĂşjar. It is located in the smaller local administrative area of EntrerrĂos, which belongs to Villanueva de la Serena in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. The beach has a bathing area, picnic spots and walking paths. Alongside the routes, visitors can also choose from specific facilities at the river beach.
