When planning a stay in Azuaga, you can give different weight to cultural and nature-related interests: churches from different periods, an ethnographic museum, Castillo de Miramontes and landscape routes are the main highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Azuaga, a useful first question is whether you are most interested in architectural history, ethnographic heritage or the landscape.

Churches from different periods

Construction of the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Consolación began at the end of the 15th century. The building combines Elizabethan Gothic with influences from Portuguese Gothic, also known as the Manueline style, and Renaissance elements. In 1993, the church was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Its varied stylistic influences make it a prominent reference point in Azuaga’s architectural history.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is a 15th-century Mudéjar church. It is also associated with an important event in the history of the Order of Santiago: the church hosted the General Chapter at which Don Alonso de Cárdenas was elected Grand Master of the order.

Another historical layer is represented by the Iglesia del Cristo del Humilladero. It was completed in 1752 and belongs to the late Baroque style of Extremadura, with Andalusian influences. Together, the churches illustrate different architectural influences rather than focusing on a single period.

Museum and castle

The Museo Etnográfico de Azuaga displays everyday objects associated with the ethnographic heritage of Azuaga and the region. It is part of the Junta de Extremadura’s “Museos de Identidad” network. It complements the view of historic buildings with everyday objects connected to the local and regional area.

An Islamic origin is considered likely for Castillo de Miramontes. Archaeological work at the castle also uncovered a Roman cistern and a Roman road. The interpretation of its origins is cautiously worded; the two Roman discoveries provide further concrete evidence of the town’s history.

Landscape routes and natural features

The Ruta del Zurrón passes through lush scrubland and offers views of the Sierra Morena as well as a panorama of Azuaga. By contrast, the walking route to the Observatorio Ornitológico de la Sierra de Azuaga is notable for its course through the “La Sierra” estate: the route runs entirely through the property. Since 2002, the estate has been protected as a Parque Periurbano de Conservación y Ocio and incorporated into Extremadura’s network of protected natural areas.

The two routes have different emphases: vegetation and views define the Ruta del Zurrón, while the route through the estate and its protected status are part of the description of the route to the observatory. The Corredor Ecológico y de Biodiversidad Río Bembézar is a separate natural feature that runs through the municipal areas of Azuaga and Granja de Torrehermosa.

Cultural routes and events

The Azuaga y sus Iglesias route passes three churches along a single road, bringing together Mudéjar, Gothic and Baroque architecture. It groups these styles along a themed route, offering a different way to explore architectural history than viewing individual churches.

The Plaza de Toros de Azuaga is also currently used for theatre performances and music festivals—a cultural attraction alongside the religious buildings and museum.

The Ruta Nocturna de Azuaga is a free, guided evening event featuring theatre performances, dances and music. It takes place as a recurring event on the last Friday in July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for your travel year.
