Cordobilla de Lácara: Reservoirs, Cultural Heritage and Romería
Accommodation in Cordobilla de Lácara
Cordobilla de Lácara can be explored through its waterside landscape, cultural heritage and regional traditions. Two small reservoirs lie nearby along the Lácara watercourse; cultural landmarks include a 15th-century church and the pilgrimage of Los Santitos. The El Lácara cooperative also represents a specific regional product. If you are considering whether the town is right for your trip, you can weigh its different attractions according to whether you are more interested in the landscape, historic buildings, local traditions or regional products.
Reservoirs and Birdlife
The Embalse de Horno Tejero is one of two small reservoirs near Cordobilla de Lácara along the Lácara watercourse; the other is the Embalse de Boquerón. Birdlife is also part of the natural setting: Horno Tejero is considered an area regularly frequented by griffon vultures, cinereous vultures, Spanish imperial eagles, peregrine falcons and eagle owls.
Churches, Art and Los Santitos
The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol is a small, single-nave church with a square, vaulted chancel and dates back to the 15th century. Inside is an archaic-looking sculpture of John the Baptist, dated to the 16th century. The church therefore brings together a building and movable cultural heritage from two successive centuries. A regional decision dated 26 March 2015 classified the parish church’s movable cultural assets as being of historical and artistic interest.
The pilgrimage chapel dedicated to Saints Justus and Pastor, locally known as “Los Santitos,” is set in an unspoilt landscape. The Romería de Los Santitos takes place on the first Sunday in May on the private estate of El Cuadrado-El Santo; prior permission from the owners is required to access the estate. During the celebration, pilgrims attend Mass in the chapel. Families traditionally gather in groups called “ranchos” beneath holm oaks. These details show the Romería as both a religious celebration and a family gathering.
Hiking and Historic Landmarks
A circular hike near Cordobilla de Lácara described on 10 May 2026 leads to the ruins of Castillo de Castellanos, through a cork oak forest, past the pilgrimage chapel and along part of the Embalse de Horno Tejero. Terrain and access may vary; some sections may also go off the trail.
Castillo de Castellanos, also known as Castillo Mohedano or Castillo de Moheda, is associated with Cordobilla de Lácara and lies 5 km north of the town. It is considered possible to visit; as it is privately owned, check access arrangements in advance. The circular hike and a possible visit to the castle are therefore separate planning considerations: the route description lists the ruins as a destination, while access to the privately owned castle should be checked in advance. Pozo del camino del Chorrero is also one of Cordobilla de Lácara’s traditional sights.
A Regional Product
The El Lácara cooperative produces cold-extracted organic extra virgin olive oil, made exclusively from the Verdial de Badajoz variety. In this case, single-variety means that the oil is made from Verdial de Badajoz and no other olive variety; its organic status and cold extraction provide further details about the product.
