Discover Calamonte: Churches, Traditions and Landscapes
Accommodation in Calamonte
Calamonte combines a rich history of church architecture with local festival traditions and a landscape where small hills interrupt the vast Extremadura plain. This offers different ways to plan your trip: historic buildings, places for leisure and nature are all part of the townscape, alongside events and traditional baked goods.
Churches, Architectural History and Creative Culture
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is believed to have been built in the late 14th or early 15th century. Starting from an earlier church building, it was expanded in the first half of the 16th century. Its single-nave layout has the shape of a Latin cross. One notable detail is the Plateresque portal: its spandrels feature two heads with echoes of indigenous depictions. The building phases, floor plan and portal offer different perspectives during a visit, rather than presenting just a single period.
The Antiguo Ayuntamiento also reflects several historical functions: the building was extensively renovated in 1897 and at the time served as the municipal administration, council chamber, courthouse, girls’ school and prison. The Iglesia San José features a stained-glass window depicting the Holy Family. Those interested in sacred art will find another clearly defined detail here, in addition to the main church building.
Beyond historic buildings, cultural life also includes creative competitions. The Certamen Nacional Calamonte Joven is a national youth competition that promotes creative and artistic work. Categories include novellas, children’s stories, poetry and plays, as well as painting, photography, short films, comics, graphic design, dance and amateur theatre. The participation requirements are reviewed and amended each year in line with young people’s suggestions.
Near Calamonte, a cave with rock paintings is located in the Sierra de la Moneda. It adds a different way of exploring the past to the town’s architectural history: here, the focus is on cave paintings, not church architecture in the town.
Landscape and Places for Leisure
Calamonte lies on the Extremadura plain, where small hills interrupt the otherwise flat terrain. The Arroyo del Chaparral runs parallel to Calamonte and is channelled along the stretch that passes through the town. The area’s Mediterranean vegetation includes holm oaks, cork oaks, wild olive trees and strawberry trees. Typical wildlife includes rabbits, hares, foxes, partridges, turtle doves, quails, storks, and various birds of prey and scavengers.
There is a picnic area and a children’s playground at the Ermita de San Isidro. If you plan to use these facilities, check their condition before your visit. The Ermita is also the traditional venue for Calamonte’s RomerĂas, which include games, competitions and tastings of typical dishes. Families and groups of friends gather to relax at the Zona de Recreo del Pocito. The Campo de Adiestramiento Los Montecillos is regularly visited by hunting enthusiasts.
The Tiro al plato sports and leisure complex offers a different kind of recreation. Its facilities include a shooting range, a covered shooting area, a shooting trench and a shooters’ area. These places therefore have clearly distinct focuses: picnics and play at the Ermita, community recreation at the Pocito and shooting sports at the Tiro al plato.
Festivals, Pastries and Getting There
La Castañá takes place on the Saturday after All Saints’ Day, November 1. If November 1 falls on a Saturday, the festival is held on All Saints’ Day itself. If you are planning your trip specifically around the festival, check the event date before making your plans. Traditional artisan baked goods from Calamonte include flores, roscas and perrunillas.
Calamonte railway station provides information about arrival and departure times and the services available on its grounds and in its facilities. Check the latest information before travelling. This will help you plan your journey and decide whether churches and cultural activities, a festival date, or the leisure areas and landscape should be the main focus of your stay.
