Cuenca: Discover Architecture, Museums and Nature
Accommodation in Cuenca
The Casas Colgadas were built in the late Middle Ages; most were rebuilt in the 16th century. Their construction history is a good starting point for discovering Cuenca’s different historical layers.
Architecture Through the Centuries
The Catedral de Santa María y San Julián also tells the story of several building phases: construction began after the city’s conquest towards the end of the 12th century, and its main structure was built in the 13th century. The originally Gothic cathedral retains its original ribbed vault and a distinctive triforium.
The present-day Puente de San Pablo marks a later period. The iron bridge was inaugurated on 19 April 1903 and is a notable example of Eiffel-style ironwork architecture. Construction of the Convento de San Pablo, by contrast, began in 1523 as a Dominican monastery, making use of the gorge’s rock formations. Today, the convent houses the Espacio Torner, with numerous works by Gustavo Torner, an artist from Cuenca.
Museums and Different Perspectives
Cuenca’s museums are concentrated in a compact, pedestrian-friendly area, making it easy for visitors to walk between them. Archaeological finds from sites throughout the province are displayed across three exhibition floors at the Museo de Cuenca. The MUCMA Museo de las Ciencias de Castilla-La Mancha is housed in two buildings in the old town. Its sections include astronomy and a planetarium, a time machine, treasures of the Earth, the history of the future, and the laboratory of life.
Other museums have their own distinctive focus: the Museo Tesoro de la Catedral is on the ground floor of the Palacio Episcopal and displays works that encapsulate eight centuries of the history of the Diocese of Cuenca. The Fundación Antonio Pérez spans four floors, with more than 30 rooms. It displays works by contemporary Spanish and international artists from the Informalism, abstraction and Pop Art movements. The Museo de Arte Abstracto displays works by renowned Spanish artists, including Picasso and Goya.
The Museo de la Semana Santa occupies two floors of the former Casa de Los Girones in the old town. A multimedia presentation conveys impressions and emotions of Semana de Pasión. For a look at palaeontology, visit Las Hoyas in La Cierva (Cuenca), an internationally renowned Early Cretaceous site. The Museo de Paleontología de Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca displays fossils, finds and dinosaur reconstructions from important sites in the region.
Festivals, Trails and Landscapes
In Cuenca, the Semana de Música Religiosa takes place alongside Semana Santa, which falls in March or April according to the lunar calendar. If you’d like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for your travel year. Horse riding, climbing, via ferratas and canyoning are also available near the city. Activities and conditions may change, so check with the provider in advance.
The Hoces de Cuenca hiking trail is registered as SL-CU 10 and passes through a mix of urban areas and paths along the rock faces of the old town. The short Paseo del Júcar offers a different experience: this riverside walking route runs along the Júcar near the city and provides views of various parts of Cuenca. The two routes differ in the surroundings described, and you don’t need to plan to visit both.
The province of Cuenca also offers a variety of landscapes: its contrasting terrain ranges from the distinctive plains of La Mancha to the Serranía, the most mountainous area of Castilla-La Mancha. The Parque Natural Serranía de Cuenca encompasses extensive forests, unusual rock formations, deep gorges and mountain streams. The ZEC-ZEPA Serranía de Cuenca is a Natura 2000 protected area that includes the Parque Natural and numerous natural monuments.
Cuisine, Getting There and Choosing a Hotel
Traditional Cuenca cuisine includes Morteruelo, Ajoarriero and Zarajos. These dishes are prepared with regional ingredients and recipes passed down through generations.
