Villar Del Humo is defined by a rock art complex with 31 sites and several named natural and hiking destinations. Three questions are especially useful when planning your trip: Which rock art would you like to discover, which route suits your schedule, and what visitor requirements apply? Torre Balbina and the Río Vencherque each add their own scenic highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Villar Del Humo, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: rock art, a viewpoint or a riverside circular route.

Rock Art in the Sierra de las Cuerdas

The Villar del Humo rock art complex comprises 31 sites with prehistoric rock paintings and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.” The paintings are spread across natural rock shelters and small caves nestled in the mountainous landscape of the Sierra de las Cuerdas. A visit therefore takes in several sites and different natural formations, rather than focusing on a single motif alone.

At the Fuente de Selva Pascuala rock shelter, a sun depiction with rays ending in four-fingered hands has been preserved. The open Selva Pascuala rock shelter lies along the upper course of the Rambla del Anear and outside the geological formation of Callejones de Potencio. A historic landmark is the discovery of the paintings at the La Peña del Escrito rock shelter: forestry engineer E. O’Kelly discovered them in 1917. Alongside the prehistoric depictions, a specific motif and a documented discovery story also stand out.

Torre Balbina and the Río Vencherque

Torre Balbina is a striking natural formation and serves as a geological landmark for the municipality. From Villar Del Humo, it can be reached by well-marked trails and offers a viewpoint. A different connection to the landscape is provided by the SL-CU 07 Paseo Fluvial del Río Vencherque circular trail: it starts in the town’s main square and follows the banks of the nearby Vencherque River. The destinations offer different highlights: Torre Balbina focuses on the formation and viewpoint, while the SL-CU 07 is a riverside circular route.

Plan Your Routes and Visit

The Ruta Pascuala is an approximately three-hour visitor route to the rock paintings at the Selva Pascuala rock shelter and the “La rambla” rock shelter in the Villar del Humo rock art area. The duration may vary depending on the group and operating conditions, so treat three hours as an approximate time frame, not a fixed duration. Unlike the SL-CU 07, which follows the riverbank, the Ruta Pascuala’s named destinations are two rock shelters with paintings.

A confirmed reservation is required to visit the Parque Cultural de Villar del Humo, and it must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Allow for this lead time and check the visitor requirement before your trip. The visitable rock art complex includes a visitor car park, an exhibition room and an audiovisual room; confirm that these facilities are currently available before your trip.
