Discover Castillo De Garcimuñoz
Accommodation in Castillo De Garcimuñoz
Castillo De Garcimuñoz combines a protected historic ensemble with church buildings, memorial sites and paths through a pine landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Castillo De Garcimuñoz, you can focus your trip on culture and festival traditions or on hiking. The buildings, paths and dates offer various starting points for doing so.
Castle and memorial sites
The historic ensemble of Castillo De Garcimuñoz is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The fortress is open to the public; when visiting the Castillo, you can explore the castle courtyard. Check the current access conditions before your trip.
The Cruz de Don Jorge, a memorial monolith about three kilometres from the Castillo, stands on the Camino de la Nava. Jorge Manrique was mortally wounded at this site. Castillo De Garcimuñoz is also a stop on the “Tras las Coplas de Jorge Manrique” route. The monolith and the cultural route both reflect the connection to Jorge Manrique, each offering a separate point of reference for exploring the town’s history.
Churches, monastery and townscape
The Church of San Juan Bautista was built from 1663 south of the stately castle and consecrated in 1708. Its Baroque altarpiece and the plant-themed wall paintings visible beneath the layer of lime add specific details about its furnishings to the building’s history. The construction period and consecration can be clearly distinguished: construction began decades before the church was consecrated.
The Real Monasterio de Agustinos was founded by Infante Don Juan Manuel and Infanta Constanza de Aragón. The church of the Convento de San Agustin was Gothic in style and had three naves; arches of the cloister have survived to this day. The birthplace of the writer Ignacio Garcia Malo is also part of the historic townscape and is located on Calle del Arco.
Cerro de San Juan and trails
The remains of the old Church of San Juan are located on Cerro de San Juan. They include a section of a side wall that is only partly visible, a pointed Gothic portal and a polygonal apse. Today, Cerro is a landscaped recreational area. On June 24, the annual pilgrimage for the San Juan festival takes the saint to the remains of the old church. Architectural remnants, present-day recreational use and a recurring tradition come together here in one place.
The Ruta de las Fuentes y los Pozos SL-CU 09 is a 6.5-kilometre circular trail with a low level of difficulty. The Sendero de Las Cuerdas, PR-CU 124, is a marked hiking trail that runs south from the town centre over Monte de Las Cuerdas and through a dense pine forest. The two routes have different features: the SL-CU 09 is specifically described in terms of its circular route, length and difficulty, while the PR-CU 124 is defined by its southern route and forest landscape. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Festivals throughout the year
The Jornadas manriqueñas take place every year in April and rotate between Castillo De Garcimuñoz, Santa María del Campo Rus and Uclés. If you are travelling for this series of events, include the respective venue in your planning. An annual day of remembrance and solidarity between Albacete and Castillo De Garcimuñoz takes place on November 9.
San Antón on January 17 includes a gastronomic Matanza festival featuring the making of chorizos. Jueves Lardero is a gastronomic celebration on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday; it marks the start of Carnival and takes place before Lent. If you want to plan your trip around a particular celebration, check its exact dates before booking.
Plan your trip and hotel search
When travelling for a festival, the calendar and, where applicable, the changing venue determine your plans; for a stay that includes hiking, the trails provide a specific focus. If cultural sites are your priority, the castle, churches, monastery remains and memorial sites offer a variety of historical themes. First decide which of these interests will shape your travel dates, then look for a hotel for your stay in Castillo De Garcimuñoz.
