Jabalera brings together a striking geological landscape and buildings whose details are easy to distinguish. The Hoz de Jabalera and the anticline provide a natural and geological focus; Santa María la Mayor and the Rollo de Justicia add ecclesiastical and civic architectural history. There is also a 6.7-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in Jabalera’s main square. If you are looking for hotels in Jabalera, these themes can help you choose a destination that suits your interests: geological formations, architecture, or a clearly defined walking route.

Geology in the Hoz de Jabalera

The cluse in the Hoz de Jabalera is considered one of the best examples of a cluse in Castilla-La Mancha. The Jabalera anticline lies in the gorge, about two kilometres from the town. It is an eroded anticline: erosion has worn away its central part and exposed older strata. The folded rock consists of limestone. These offer two complementary perspectives: the cluse is notable for its regional significance, while the description of the anticline identifies the rock structure and the effects of erosion. This distinction makes Jabalera’s geological focus more specific than a simple impression of the landscape.

The wider landscape is also striking: Jabalera is shaped by the most rugged and winding terrain in the entire comarca, with the Sierra de Altomira forming the backdrop. In the area around Jabalera, the mountain range has dual protection under the Natura 2000 network: as a ZEC (Zona de Especial ConservaciĂłn) and a ZEPA (Zona de Especial ProtecciĂłn para las Aves).

Santa María la Mayor and the town’s history

The parish church of Santa MarĂa la Mayor was built in the 15th century, with significant architectural elements added in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its construction history therefore spans several centuries rather than a single period of origin. On the south side, there is a porch with depressed arches resting on columns with round shafts and Doric capitals. Inside, the space is divided into three naves. The central nave is covered by a lunette vault; the central vault features a quatrefoil medallion made of red jasper.

The architectural details range from the porch to the vault and medallion. For choosing a theme, this clearly distinguishes the chronological sequence of construction phases from the church’s specific forms and materials. The Rollo de Justicia stands in the square opposite. Its square base has three steps and is topped by a metal cross. Because it is rare in the region, it is considered a civic feature of great interest. The church and the Rollo thus represent different aspects of the town’s history: ecclesiastical architecture and a rare civic monument in the square opposite.

Circular route and practical information

The “Contrastes alcarreños en la Sierra de Altomira” circular route is 6.7 kilometres long and starts and ends in Jabalera’s main square. It enters the “Sierra de Altomira” Natura 2000 protected area, designated as both a ZEC and a ZEPA. The protected area covers more than 20 percent of the municipality. The route’s length and its start and end points give you specific details for planning, without specifying a walking time or difficulty level. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

To reach the cluse, a 1.5-kilometre track runs west from Jabalera to the gorge. The route passes alongside an old quarry and the ruins of a mill. Check local conditions before visiting. There is some risk when approaching the edges of the gorge to view the cluse; take appropriate care there.
