Cañada Del Hoyo: Lagoons and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Cañada Del Hoyo
When choosing a stay in Cañada del Hoyo, you can take nature and hiking into account, as well as history and art. The Lagunas de Cañada del Hoyo Natural Monument comprises seven karst lagoons that hold water year-round.
Lagoons and Hiking Trails
A hiking trail accessible to everyone leads to the main lagoons of the natural monument, including Laguna del Tejo, the deepest lagoon at 32 metres. The PR-CU 83 starts in Cañada del Hoyo and leads to Laguna del Tejo; it follows the same route back to town. Rest areas and interpretation areas are among the features of this trail, along with panoramic views and geological points of interest.
Access varies between the lagoons: the first three are freely accessible, while the others are on the “7 leguas” estate. Check the visiting arrangements locally before planning a visit to the lagoons on the estate.
Historic Routes and Buildings
Other hikes focus on historic landmarks. The PR-CU 87 crosses the preserved Puente Molina, with its Romanesque arch, along the former medieval “camino real de Las Zomas a Cañada del Hoyo” route. The PR-CU 88 starts at Castillo del Buen Suceso, follows the Camino de la Virgen, and returns to Cañada del Hoyo after joining the PR-CU 87. The routes differ in their named landmarks: the bridge is part of the PR-CU 87 route, while the castle is the starting point of the PR-CU 88.
Castillo del Buen Suceso is privately owned; the grounds outside the castle are freely accessible. Rural paths lead from Cañada del Hoyo to the hill, with the final stretch covered on foot. Parts of the wall, the keep and the former castle courtyard remain. This information helps distinguish free access to the grounds outside the castle from the preserved parts of the building.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and the Ermita del Hoyo are considered examples of the Serranía’s vernacular architecture. The Ermita de la Virgen de los Ángeles is set in scenic surroundings about five kilometres from Cañada del Hoyo. These examples of regional architecture complement a scenic destination outside the town.
Art and Exhibitions
Kárstica Espacio de Creación began operating in 2019 as a contemporary art space in the rural surroundings of Cañada del Hoyo, Cuenca. Its programme includes artist residencies, labs and workshops, as well as gatherings of artists. The project thus adds a contemporary dimension alongside the area’s natural and historical themes.
The Centro Expositivo de Cañada del Hoyo is currently closed. Its exhibits explain the formation of the Las Hoyas site and introduce the habitat of its predator. If you are planning a visit, check its status before travelling.
