Barajas De Melo offers several points to consider when planning a trip: architectural history, recurring festivals and paths through the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Barajas De Melo, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Cultural History and Architecture

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its portal is designed in the Gothic-Plateresque style and features a keel arch framed by cylindrical columns. The church also has a baptismal font belonging to the Count of Montesclaros. The building period, portal design and baptismal font offer different cultural and historical points of interest related to this building.

The Casa de Fermín Caballero is the birthplace of Fermín Caballero. The palatial Palacete Fuente Alcázar dates from the 19th century and is privately owned. The Jardín del Cerro is also private: Fermín Caballero created it in 1860 as a country retreat. Together, a biographical site, a private 19th-century building and a historically landscaped estate represent different facets of the town’s history.

The cultural centre named after Fermín Caballero houses personal belongings, documents and a selected bibliography. The Centro de Interpretación presents the area’s distinctive features and the way of life of its inhabitants. It has rooms for temporary exhibitions and workshops. Thus, alongside architecture, local history and everyday life are also among the town’s cultural themes.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Vega take place around 8 September. A solemn mass and a procession are held on 8 September. The traditional Encierros are part of the festivities on 9 September. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant period.

Another regular date in the local calendar is Los Mayos on 30 April. On this occasion, children decorate the Mayo tree in front of the church, sing the Mayo for the Virgen de la Vega and light a fire in front of the church. The customs in April and September offer different opportunities to plan your travel dates around local traditions.

Local cuisine also features a distinctive tradition: gachas are considered the most typical dish in the cuisine of Barajas De Melo.
