If you are looking for a hotel in Palomares del Campo, you can plan your stay around the local features that interest you: architectural and art history, festival traditions, mining or rural paths. The church’s dates, festival dates and the landscape of hills and fields offer different points of reference.

Church and art history

Construction of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción began in 1553 under master stonemason Cristóbal de Oñate. The façade, completed in 1638, was designed by Francisco de Anchea. This makes it possible to distinguish the start of construction from the completion of the façade: 85 years separate the two dates. The church contains notable works of sculpture, painting and architecture from the 16th to the 18th centuries. In addition to its architectural history, these works offer a broader time frame and encompass several art forms.

Festival traditions throughout the year

The festival in honor of the Virgen de la Cabeza has been celebrated on the last Sunday in April since 1614. Dancers, Gitanillas and Tunos perform at the festival; Paloteo dances are also featured. Unlike the church’s dates, 1614 marks the beginning of a festival tradition, not a phase of construction. Another date belongs to the festival in honor of the Santo Cristo de la Paz, which takes place on the last weekend of September. By comparison, the Virgen celebration falls on a single Sunday in April, while the Santo Cristo festival takes place over a weekend in late September. This clearly separates the two celebrations in the calendar year.

Mining and historical traces

The HPC 5 mining complex comprises more than 150 shafts or mines. The HPC 5 mine (Huete-Palomares del Campo) is considered the largest mineral extraction operation in the entire empire. The watchtower known as “Castillo de San Miguel” is associated with the Almoravid period. The two subjects highlight different aspects: the scale and mining activity of HPC 5, and the watchtower’s Almoravid context. Together, they reveal two distinct historical connections without attributing them to the same period or structure.

Landscape and paths

Palomares del Campo lies in the Alcarria conquense, a landscape of gentle hills and dry-farmed fields. Traditional masonry houses and simple façades, typical of the Alcarria, remain in the town. This allows the regional landscape to be distinguished from the town’s built character: hills and fields shape the surroundings, while masonry and façades define the townscape.

The rural paths in the municipality of Palomares del Campo are suitable for easy hikes and walks between cultivated fields. Hills and fields describe the character of the landscape, while the paths offer a specific walking activity within the municipality. A ford near Fuente del Pez is part of the landscape. It adds a single distinctive feature to the description alongside the gentle hills and dry-farmed fields.
